A 30% increase! US beauty industry revenue reached $22 billion in 2021

According to data from research firm NPD, the U.S. beauty industry generated $22 billion in sales in 2021, up 30% from 2020. Perfume sales increased 49% year-on-year, outpacing all other products , followed by hair products , which grew 47% , and then cosmetics and skin care products , which grew 23% and 18% , respectively .

 

In the scented products category, sales of perfumes, colognes and other scented products increased 61% year-over-year, while sales of scented candles, essential oils and other home scented products increased more than 20%. Sales of scented products accounted for 45% of the full year in the fourth quarter , largely due to holiday sales.

 

Additionally, in the hair category , other styling products such as hair gel, hair cream , and mousse have resumed growth in 2021, with sales of styling products up 45% from 2020. NPD expects styling products to grow another 15% in 2022. This growth will continue until 2024 as people continue to return to more social activities in the coming months or years, according to another NPD report .

 

As consumers look their best to re-enter society , sales of facial cosmetics such as foundation, primers and tinted moisturizers increased by double digits, as did makeup sprays and makeup removers.

 

The cosmetics category benefited from consumers' return to interest in makeup, with creams , blushes and other products popularly used in YouTube videos and other social media also seeing growth. It is important to note that brands founded by makeup artists and influencers led all cosmetics brands in revenue .

 

As for skin care, sales of core skin care products including facial cleansers, creams and serums increased by 15% to 24% compared to 2020.

 

Larissa Jensen, beauty industry consultant at NPD , said the beauty industry is unique in instilling confidence and changing people's image . This puts the beauty industry in an important position in the minds of consumers . The beauty product market faced obstacles in 2020, but it has regained its vitality in 2021 .
