Sellers, get ready! Container profits will peak in 2022

A few days ago, the rise in shipping costs became a hot topic, but later after the China-US-EU Maritime Regulatory Summit, several shipping companies such as CMA CGM began to stop raising prices, but the shipping industry did not cool down as a result. According to foreign media reports, container profits will reach their peak in 2022!

In February, Maersk CEO Soren Skou called the fourth quarter of 2020 "the best quarter ever." But in a preliminary outlook earlier this year, Maersk announced earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization of $8.5 billion to $10.5 billion, with the top end of the range about four times higher than the fourth quarter of 2020.

Just yesterday, Maersk announced that it has raised its expected revenue and profit for this year . It is reported that Maersk's EBITDA in the first half of this year was US$9.1 billion. Now it expects EBITDA in the second half of the year to be US$12.9 billion to US$13.9 billion. The higher its profit means that the cost of cargo owners will gradually increase. It is worth noting that as of now, Maersk has not stopped the price increase like CMA CGM.

As reported, compared with the first half of the year, the second half of the year is more "profitable" for ocean carriers , but more helpless for shippers, and it is difficult to achieve a balance between shippers and shipping companies.

But sellers should note that this is not the worst period yet, as the second half of the year may not be the peak. According to a new forecast by Deutsche Bank, container shipping has entered a "super cycle" and ocean carriers will earn more in 2022 than this year , which means that shippers have to accept that shipping will remain the same or worse for more than a year.

At the same time, Deutsche Bank predicts that Maersk 's EBITDA outlook for 2021 will be raised to US$22.18 billion. Maersk is expected to make a profit of US$23.77 billion next year, and Hapag-Lloyd 's profit next year may be US$11.88 billion.

However, analysts predict that this behavior will subside in 2023. Subsidy is a good thing, but sellers can only smile at this subsiding time, saying that the cost has increased, but the goods still need to be shipped, otherwise what can they do.
