It is understood that due to the impact of Canadian wildfires and rail vehicle supply, Vancouver's port terminals have become overcrowded , and railway damage has caused delays in ship berthing at the Port of Vancouver , which is expected to be delayed by 72 to 96 hours .

And there is a huge backlog . With the global shipping supply chain already under strain, rail disruptions have put the Port of Vancouver under pressure from a surge in container volumes.

In China, Yantian Port ceased operations in late May as a result of stringent preventive measures to curb rising cases following a resurgence of coronavirus cases in Shenzhen, which led to severe congestion and operational delays at the port .

These issues have led many carriers to either choose not to call at the port or to impose new surcharges on containers entering the port . On June 17, Hapag-Lloyd’s customer update confirmed that major carriers had missed about 53 calls at the port and diverted 17 to the neighboring port of Nansha.

Affected by congestion at ports in Asia and Europe, German shipping company Hapag-Lloyd has decided to stop calling at Rotterdam on its Far East Loop 4 or FE4 eastbound rotation for seven consecutive weeks and to impose additional charges on routes from East Asia to North America .

Last week, Matsun Shipping announced that it would increase port congestion fees for ports in the western United States by US$2,000 per container starting from August 5. This is the third time that port congestion fees have been imposed since June 10. After the three port congestion fees are combined, the 45-foot container is as high as US$5,697!

In addition, on June 10, Ocean Network Express or ONE announced a port congestion surcharge of $1,000 per container on all inbound refrigerated containers. French carrier CMA CGM said on June 14 that it would impose a port congestion surcharge of $1,250 per refrigerated container on all units entering Yantian . The surcharge will take effect on June 11.

Continued congestion and a series of surcharges have exacerbated the already chaotic container market, pushing spot freight rates to a record high. It seems that the chaos in the logistics market cannot be solved in a day or two!
