U.S. pet product sales surge 376%

Afterpay , a "buy now, pay later" service provider, recently released the 2021 holiday shopping trends. The company said that with 100,000 partners around the world , more and more consumers use buy now , pay later for holiday shopping to solve their budget problems . This has led to a 41% increase in merchant traffic during the holiday shopping period .

 

According to data released by Afterpay, shopping trends among US consumers include:

 

Partywear is making a comeback during the holiday season . Velvet and sequined apparel are the top choices for partygoers —up 188% and 146% year-over-year, respectively.

 

Pet supplies are in high demand . Pet owners are actively looking for pet supplies to pamper their companions, with sales of related products soaring 376% compared to the same period last year .

 

Department stores are back. Throughout the holiday season, consumers more than doubled their shopping trips to department stores up 256% year-over-year .

 

Supply chain issues have driven a surge in gift card sales , with spending on gift cards up 50 times year-over-year to avoid shipping delays for physical goods .

 

Home renovations continue . Long-term stay-at-home orders have not dampened interest in home furnishings , with purchases up 49% year-over-year .

 

The demand for ski wear is on the rise . Due to the easing of social isolation measures and the popularity of snow sports, there has been a huge increase in the demand for ski wear. This has led to a 10-fold increase in consumer spending at ski and snow merchants .

 

The rise of gender-neutral clothing . Gender-neutral products make fashion more accessible to everyone, with sales of gender-neutral items described as "unisex" in merchants' products increasing 57% year-on-year .

 

Offline shopping has also seen a strong rebound, with Afterpay releasing sales data showing in-store shopping grew 384 per cent year-on-year , with in-store shopping increasing 442 per cent on Black Friday alone.

 

Shakaila, consumer shopping psychologist at Afterpay   “People will continue to create their own style in their homes or through their pets , and retailers can focus on those categories , Forbes-Bell said.

 

Afterpay claims that consumers have saved up to $459 million in credit card fees and interest in 2021 by using Afterpay's payment solutions to shop online and in stores .
