Many people died and more than 100,000 products were recalled

Recalls are frequent. If the recall is due to minor problems, the seller will suffer some losses at most. However, if casualties are caused, the damage to consumers is irreversible. Recently, a portable bed rail and portable air conditioner were recalled because they caused a death.

Portable Bed Rails

The recall involves two types of bed rails: the regular type, which consists of white metal rails and black foam handles, is about 35 inches high and 20 inches wide; and the two-in-one type, which consists of a dark brown metal support frame and a bed frame.

The product was sold between November 2012 and December 2021, with prices ranging from approximately US$22 to US$80. It was sold in offline stores in the United States and on e-commerce platforms such as Amazon and Walmart.

The reason for the recall is that the bed rails are not secure, and users may be trapped in the bed rails or between the rails and the side of the mattress, which poses a risk of serious entrapment and suffocation. So far, three reports of deaths from entrapment have been received, all of which were elderly people in their 80s. The elderly are already inconvenient to move, and the consequences of being trapped can be imagined. The brand recently announced a recall of the product, involving approximately 104,900 units.

Portable air conditioner

For the sake of convenience, portable devices are very popular in the market, such as portable heaters and portable air conditioners, which are very popular among consumers. However, the hidden risks should not be ignored. Fires caused by negligence are not uncommon. Recently, a portable air conditioner was recalled due to fire hazards.

The recall is due to a faulty drain motor in the air conditioner that can ignite the plastic casing of the device, posing a risk of fire and burns . Eleven reports of portable air conditioners catching fire or emitting smoke during use have been received , resulting in two injuries and one death from smoke inhalation.

The air conditioner is sold on multiple e-commerce platforms including Amazon, with a price of about US$290. The number of units involved in the recall is approximately 33,570.

Compared with previous recalls, these two cases directly caused serious casualties. Sellers should take this as a warning and always put product quality first, especially products for children and the elderly, and pay more attention to them.
