Second-hand market booming? 66% of Americans are willing to accept second-hand gifts

Affected by rising prices, increasing shortages and logistics delays, more and more Americans are choosing to buy second-hand gifts during the holidays.

It is understood that thredUP, an American second-hand clothing trading platform, commissioned a research organization to survey 2,000 American consumers. The survey results showed that during the holidays, more and more consumers began to choose a more frugal consumption method, and the shame of giving second-hand gifts was also decreasing.

Data shows that under inflation and supply chain pressure, consumers believe that giving second-hand gifts is a viable option: 52% of consumers are worried that popular gifts will be more expensive this year ; one-third of consumers believe that it is difficult to buy gifts this year due to limited inventory of goods ; 53% plan to adjust their holiday shopping plans to cope with this year's logistics delays. Therefore, nearly half ( 49% ) of consumers said they are considering alternatives such as resale/second-hand items .

At the same time, the number of consumers willing to accept second-hand gifts is also increasing : 66% of consumers are now willing to accept second-hand gifts ; 62% of consumers believe that buying second-hand clothing/fashion gifts is more socially acceptable now than 5 years ago.

As secondhand gifts become more popular, Generation Z is leading the way: 72% of Gen Z ( born 1995-2009) are willing to receive a secondhand gift, compared to 66% of consumers overall . 64% of Gen Z are willing to give a secondhand gift, compared to 54% of consumers overall .

The primary reason why Generation Z chooses second-hand gifts is for environmental sustainability, with 66% of Generation Z choosing this option. The second is to save money , with 62% of Generation Z willing to buy second-hand gifts to save money.

In addition, thredUP also announced the second-hand clothing brands and styles with the highest demand in the past month: Converse sneakers , Lululemon sports jackets , Torrid jeans, Ugg boots , Reformation dresses, Patagonia fleece sweaters, FRYE boots , Coach Wristlets , Vince sweaters , and KateSpade crossbody bags.

Survey data also showed that the most popular gift for this holiday season is a gift card, with two in five respondents saying they plan to give a gift card this year.
