As the holidays approach, more than a third of U.S. shoppers say they are concerned that online orders will not be delivered on time, according to a new survey report from Coresight Research . Despite this concern, 78.2% of shoppers still want to buy gifts online during this holiday season .
According to the survey, nearly 20% of consumers plan to transfer part or all of their spending from offline to online during this holiday season , while 11.6% of consumers plan to transfer spending from e-commerce channels to physical stores .
Amid the supply chain crisis , concerns about store out-of-stock items are driving consumers to look online for goods . A recent report from Deloitte found that 75% of shoppers are worried about holiday products selling out , which is driving them to buy holiday goods earlier this year.
But stores will also become a primary channel this year as shipping delays impact the industry. In the U.S., nearly two-thirds (65.1%) of shoppers plan to buy gifts from a physical store this holiday season , according to Coresight Research . Deloitte ’s report is consistent with this, indicating that consumers are willing to return to in-store shopping this year and in the years to come.
A report released by the NPD Group showed that 58 % of respondents said they planned to shop in offline stores , thanks to the widespread use of the new crown vaccine. Another report from Forrester estimated that by 2024, 72% of retail sales will occur in-store.
Coresight Research found that consumers will also use in-store pickup services . According to the survey, more than 20% of respondents said they would use curbside pickup , while 17.9% said they would use BOPIS ( buy online, pick up offline) services to complete some of their online purchases. Not long ago, Amazon also launched an offline pickup service.
Although the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on retailers is multifaceted , multiple studies show that sales will rise during this year's holiday shopping season . According to estimates by Wells Fargo analysts, holiday sales in 2021 may increase by 11% over last year. The ICSC's annual holiday shopping intentions survey predicts that sales during the holiday shopping season between November and December this year will increase by 8.9% over the same period last year to $923 billion .
