Recently, the Guangdong Province WTO/TBT Notification Consulting Research Center released a report on the recall of consumer products exported to Europe and the United States in the first three quarters of this year.
In the United States, in the first three quarters of this year, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission ( CPSC) issued a total of 173 recall notices, a decrease of 9.4% compared with the first three quarters of last year.
Among them, there were 106 products from China , a year-on-year increase of 17.8%, accounting for 61.3% of the total CPSC recalls, an increase of 14.2 percentage points over the same period last year, involving an amount of approximately US$5.18 billion.
Specifically in terms of categories, the most recalled Chinese products exported to the United States were electrical appliances /electrical equipment , with 18 cases, followed by children's products (14 cases), textiles and clothing (13 cases), sports/fitness equipment (8 cases), toys (7 cases), and furniture and home decoration (7 cases).
The top categories in 2020 are electrical appliances/electrical equipment, children's products, furniture and home decoration, bicycles and their accessories, and toys.
Comparing the situation in the past two years, we can find that electrical appliances, children's products, toys and furniture are the hardest hit areas of recall.
Among the 13 recalled textile and clothing products, there were 7 children's pajamas. The main reason for the recall was that the products did not meet the flammability standards for children's pajamas and there was a risk of burning children.
Let’s take a look at the situation in the European Union. The EU Rapid Alert System for Dangerous Non-Food Products ( “SafeGate”) issued a total of 1,521 recall notifications, a decrease of 2.6% year-on-year.
Among them, there were 696 products from China , a year-on-year decrease of 6.6%, accounting for 45.8% of the total number of security gate notifications, a decrease of 1.9 percentage points from the same period last year.
Among them, the products with the most notifications were toys ( 199 cases), followed by electrical appliances and equipment ( 124 cases) and protective equipment (92). Comparing the notifications in the past two years, it can be found that toys, protective equipment, electrical appliances, children's products, clothing, and lighting appliances are all the hardest hit areas for recalls.
Specifically for each EU member state, the top five members that submitted recall notifications for Chinese consumer products exported to the EU are: Hungary (94 cases), Poland (91 cases), Germany (84 cases), France (62 cases), and Sweden (46 cases).
Among them, the products with the most reports from Hungary were electrical appliances and equipment ( 36 cases), lighting equipment and light strings (26 cases); the products with the most reports from Poland were toys (68 cases); the products with the most reports from Germany were jewelry (33 cases) and protective equipment (29 cases).
