Maersk opens first Russian inland port

Recently, Maersk announced the opening of the first Russian inland container port 10 km from Novorossiysk, the largest port on the Black Sea . The new inland port operates two railway lines with a total length of 570 m and is equipped with fertilizer, liquid cargo and general pallet cargo handling facilities.

Novorossiysk is one of Russia’s largest export hubs and gateways, connected to major population centers in Russia, Transcaucasia and Central Asia by rail and highway. Operating an inland port service in Novorossiysk enables Maersk to offer customers differentiated and unique end-to-end integrated transport solutions, from the origin of goods to overseas destinations .

It is reported that Maersk's new facility is a key hub for supply chain management, covering an area of 3 hectares, can store 1,500 20 -foot standard containers , and is expected to handle 25,000 containers per year.

Zolt Katona, head of Maersk Eastern Europe, said: “ At a time when global supply chains are tight , we are pleased to be able to provide additional service facilities to Russia to ease this situation . The logistics goal of this new inland port is to give customers more time and flexibility . They can now easily make routing decisions to their destination when they arrive at the discharge port .

Ludwig Tarkanyan, Managing Director of Europack LLC, said: “We operate in all Russian ports and handle nearly 1 million tons of container exports per year. Novorossiysk is one of the most important hubs and Maersk is a top partner for us . We firmly believe that the expansion of Maersk into inland logistics will provide us with a unique opportunity.

The new inland port facility in Russia also reflects Maersk’s strategic plan to improve the logistics and service capabilities of its customers’ supply chains by opening more logistics ports .

With the rapid development of Russia's e-commerce market, Russia's overall container market grew by 7.6% in the first half of 2021. Driven by the global economic recovery , the surge in cargo transit , and the continued growth of imports and exports , Russia's container market may continue to develop steadily in the future.
