Recently, according to CNMO, Amazon was sued by a female employee of the company because "the female employee went to the toilet six times a day and was fired by Amazon."
It is understood that the woman, who was previously an employee at an Amazon warehouse, told a manager in November last year that she suffered from " irritable bowel syndrome " and needed to go to the toilet six times a day. The manager asked her to get a doctor's certificate.
"Irritable bowel syndrome" is a common functional gastrointestinal disease. Its main clinical manifestations are abdominal pain, bloating or abdominal discomfort, accompanied by changes in bowel habits such as frequency and stool characteristics. Symptoms often recur or persist chronically.
But in the following two months, the woman did not get the certificate. In January of this year , the manager said that she would be put on record and needed to get a doctor's certificate within 5 days, but the woman said in the lawsuit that the earliest time she could make an appointment with a doctor was six days later.
Five days after her case was documented, she was fired by Amazon, with her manager telling her it was too late to provide proof.
In June this year , the woman filed a lawsuit in the New Jersey Superior Court, claiming that Amazon discriminated against people with physical disabilities and failed to be inclusive in accordance with New Jersey's anti-discrimination law, and demanded compensation from Amazon. Earlier this month, Amazon responded by attempting to escalate the case to federal court.
The woman did not specify in her lawsuit how much damages she would seek , but Amazon said it expected her to ask for more than $75,000, which is one of the reasons why Amazon sought to bring the case to federal court .
Amazon's lawyers stated: "The plaintiff earned $15.25 per hour, or $31,720.00 per year, and received a shift allowance of $0.60 per hour, or $1,248 per year. Therefore, as of the time of filing this lawsuit, the plaintiff's total lost wages were $17,251.75." This loss after being fired was far lower than the amount of compensation requested .
In fact, Amazon has long used a series of technical means to monitor its employees. Its AI system not only tracks everyone's work progress , but also accurately calculates employees ' "slacking off" time. Employees who spend too much time drinking water or going to the toilet, or who have not touched packages for a long time will be deemed to be slacking off and are at risk of being fired .
Previously, many employees complained that Amazon founder Bezos stayed in space for 3 minutes on a spacecraft , which was shorter than the time employees spent in the toilet. Now an employee has been fired for going to the toilet frequently, which is very ironic.
Amazon employees are monitored, which does not respect the personal freedom of employees. As the world's largest e-commerce platform, although this practice ensures work efficiency, it will undoubtedly hurt the enthusiasm of employees! Amazon is being sued |
