72% of Indian consumers oppose the Indian government's ban on e-commerce "limited time sales" activities

The Indian Ministry of Consumer Affairs had previously proposed in June to amend the Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules, 2020, which included a ban on "limited-time sales" and "mandatory mention of country of origin".

However , a recent survey by Indian social media platform LocalCirles found that Indian consumers seem to have different views on these measures of the Indian government at times .

LocalCirles survey data shows that about 72% of online consumers believe that the Indian government should not ban or interfere with information such as sales discounts provided on e-commerce platforms.

When asked what their primary mode of purchase was for themselves and their family in the past 12 months, 26% of the 10,818 respondents said they were mall, local retailers and stores , 22% said they called local retail stores and delivered to their homes , and 49% (the highest) said “e-commerce shopping websites and apps” were their preferred shopping mode in the past 12 months.

As for the reasons for choosing e-commerce shopping, 79% of people said they choose online shopping for " convenience and security " , and 64% said they did so for " more choices and options ". 61% said it was for "lower pricing" , so it is normal that so many Indian consumers do not agree with the Indian government's ban on "limited-time sales".

The Indian government, in its proposed amendments to e-commerce rules, has made mandatory mention of “country of origin” information, seeking to inform consumers whether the product is manufactured in India.

LocalCirles also conducted a survey on the frequency with which Indian consumers looked for “country of origin” information on e-commerce platforms in the past six months and found that 43% of consumers sought “country of origin” information when shopping online in the past six months.

Another 13% said they “did it for 25% to 50% of products,” 4% said they “did it for 10% to 25% of products,” and 26% said they never mentioned this information .
