Half of U.S. online shoppers are "obsessively" searching for coupons before making a purchase

In the United States, almost all consumers search for promotional codes and online coupons before shopping. This is the result of a survey of more than 1,300 adults in the United States by online trading platform CouponFollow.

The CouponFollow survey was conducted to investigate key trends and drivers of online shopping and to understand the role of digital coupons and discounts in Americans’ online shopping in 2021.

Two-thirds of consumers discover brands through promotional codes

According to the new survey from CouponFollow , 83% of people have used a promotional code at least once when shopping online, and about three-quarters (73%) say they like receiving digital coupons.

Nearly all ( 96%) respondents said they search for promotional codes or digital coupons before making an online purchase. More than half ( 51%) said they often search for promotional codes before making a purchase.

Women are more likely than men to search for promotional codes ( 87% vs. 78%). The differences in shopping habits between men and women don’t stop there , with 62% of respondents saying they do most of their online shopping on their phones, compared to 70% of women and only 53% of men.

For respondents who use coupons and promo codes for shopping, their top categories for shopping are apparel ( 59%), food delivery (42%), and beauty/self-care (37%). Food delivery and pet supplies tied for fourth place (32%).

Additionally, 73% of respondents admitted that receiving a discount from a brand would make them a more loyal customer, and two-thirds (66%) of respondents discovered a brand through a promotional code.

Three factors that influence online shopping decisions

Price is the most important factor in online purchases, with two-thirds ( 66%) of respondents saying they have become more price-conscious in the past 12 months. This may be due to the reduction in income of some consumers during the epidemic, or the increase in prices of some goods caused by the epidemic and the supply chain.

More than half (53%) of respondents to the survey believe that shipping time is the second most important factor in their online shopping decisions, second only to price. Shipping time is more important to younger people, with 59% of those aged 18-29 mentioning this, compared to only 45% of those aged 60 and over.

Reviews came in third on the list of factors that influence online shopping, with about half ( 51%) of respondents to the survey mentioning this. Much like shipping time, it was more important to younger people aged 18-29 (56%) than to those aged 60+ (49%).
