For millennials, online shopping has become a consumption habit because it fits their lifestyle better. New research shows that millennials are driving changes in the way retailers deliver goods, which may reshape the future development of e-commerce .
Sendcloud recently published a guide to e-commerce delivery, which surveyed 7,873 consumers from eight European countries in June . The results show that as millennials’ purchasing power increases, their expectations for online shopping and logistics are changing.
Millennials place greater emphasis on flexibility in package delivery. Four in five millennials see flexibility as a key element in package delivery, compared to 53% of baby boomers (ages 57-65) . Some 63 % of millennials want the freedom to choose when their package is in transit, and 58% want the ability to change the delivery address , compared to 27% and 25% of baby boomers , respectively .
Millennials have a higher demand for premium shipping options . 76% of Baby Boomers simply choose the most standard delivery method , while only 53% of Millennials do the same. Compared with Baby Boomers, Millennials prefer next-day and same-day delivery services , weekend delivery, and express locker storage.
The purchasing power of millennials is also significantly higher than that of baby boomers. Research shows that millennials spend an average of about 143 euros per online shopping , while baby boomers pay less than 100 euros per order . In addition, millennials are willing to spend more for more convenient delivery services. Millennials are willing to spend up to 4 euros on delivery fees, while among baby boomers, this fee has dropped to 3.2 euros.
This study provides insights into the differences in online shopping behaviors between generations , with millennials currently having higher and higher requirements for online shopping, and flexibility being the core concern of millennials. This trend is expected to continue in the future, which will also reshape the future of e-commerce and logistics industries .
