The West Coast route is a shipping route launched by Matson from the eastern coast of China to the Long Beach Port in the western United States . At 21:00 on August 10, Beilun District, Ningbo City, Zhejiang Province found a suspected positive case of COVID-19 nucleic acid test during routine testing of workers at Ningbo Zhoushan Port. The person was diagnosed as an asymptomatic carrier on August 11. Subsequently, the Meishan Port District, which was most closely related to it , was closed.

 

With the closure of Meishan Port , many people are worried that the global supply chain will be in danger of being out of stock. Leibowitz, president of the US consulting firm LeanDNA, said: China's position in the global supply chain is crucial. Any production suspension and delay in China may cause problems in two or three links of the production chain.

 

How much impact will the closure of Meishan Port have on the global supply chain? Some analysts say the impact should be smaller than the outbreak at Yantian Port in late May.

 

The container throughput of Meishan Port is far less than that of Yantian Port . Last year, Meishan Port handled 5.4404 million TEUs , while Yantian Port handled 13.3485 million TEUs . In addition, the case in Ningbo is a special team member, and the special closed management of the two-point one-line may reduce the impact of this epidemic to a minimum. Another point that cannot be ignored is that only Meishan Port was closed this time , and other ports of Ningbo Zhoushan Port are operating normally. The container throughput of Meishan Port accounts for only about 20% of Ningbo Zhoushan Port .

 

Gao Feng, spokesperson of the Ministry of Commerce, revealed at a regular press conference on the 19th that the overall operation of Ningbo-Zhoushan Port is currently stable. According to the production express report, the average daily throughput of Ningbo-Zhoushan Port from August 11 to 17 continued to maintain about 90% of the average daily throughput in July. Recently, good news came that the Meishan Port area will be unsealed on August 25 and resumed on September 1.

 

However, it is undeniable that port congestion in many parts of the world has intensified again due to the rebound of the epidemic. According to the US Consumer News and Business Channel, as of local time on the 16th , more than 20 cargo ships were waiting for berths in the busiest ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach in the United States , and the waiting time could be up to 12 days.

 

With the arrival of the second half of the year when students go back to school and work and the shopping season, the demand for goods in the European and American markets has soared. The supply chain is currently under great pressure, and any port congestion or terminal closure caused by any reason will have an impact on the container shipping market. However, it is really chilling that rumor mongers are still making trouble at this time.
