Headphones become a necessity, South Korea's wearable product market grows 50%!

According to a survey, due to the spread of the epidemic , the demand for wireless headphones, smart watches, etc. in South Korea has increased, and the wearable product market grew by about 50% last year.

 

According to South Korean market research firm IDC on the 6th, in a recent domestic wearable device research survey, the shipment volume of wearable devices in South Korea last year was 12.76 million units, an increase of 50.7% over the previous year .

 

In terms of product types, shipments of wireless headphones reached 9.39 million units, accounting for 74% of the wearable product market . Shipments of headphones increased by 48.9% compared with last year.

 

In particular, Apple, Samsung Electronics and other companies' market share of wireless headphones reached 85.3%, which is a stronger market dominance compared with 71.6% last year.

 

It is understood that the wristband market share is 13.8%, ranking second, with shipments of 1.76 million sets , an average annual growth of 53.3%.

 

Shipments of watches reached 1.6 million units, up 60.0% from the previous year, accounting for 12.6% of the entire wearable watch market.

 

IDC analysis said: "Under the epidemic situation, online learning and working from home have increased, and headphones have become a necessity at home. The expansion of the smartphone lineup without headphone terminals has also promoted market growth."

 

In addition, the use of PCs in South Korea has increased during the epidemic , while the use of paper media among young people has decreased.

 

According to the report "Comparison of Media Usage Patterns among Young People Before and After the Epidemic" released by the Korea Information and Communications Policy Institute (KISDI) on the 7th, the utilization rate of paper media such as textbooks decreased significantly last year.

 

The research team analyzed the media used in class by school students aged 8-18, and found that the rate of using textbooks last year was 27.5%, a significant decrease from the rate of using paper media (40.3%) in 2019. On the contrary, the number of students using electronic products such as desktop computers or laptops to attend classes has increased.

 

In 2020, the utilization rate of desktop computers was 14.4% and the utilization rate of laptops was 10.3%, which is in stark contrast to 2019 when the utilization rates of both desktop computers and laptops were below 5%.

 

"While time spent reading textbooks and books has decreased, viewing of learning videos has increased due to non-face-to-face teaching," the research team said .
