Jigsaw puzzles can not only train children's hands-on ability, but also improve their observation ability. Many parents like to buy jigsaw puzzles for their children to play with, and children's jigsaw puzzles have become a popular category in the toy market. There are a wide variety of jigsaw puzzle products, but they also contain many loopholes. Unqualified jigsaw puzzles may even pose a risk of suffocation.
In early August this year, the Canadian Ministry of Health announced a recall of puzzles produced in China because the small rivets on the products could fall off, causing choking in children if they accidentally ingested them.
The products recalled this time are a variety of flat puzzles, with patterns including animals, farms, letters, vehicles, etc.
The following is the detailed information of the recalled products:
Health Canada believes that the small rivets used to lift the puzzle pieces could become detached from the puzzle, posing a choking hazard to the user.
It is reported that this type of product was sold in Canada from January 2015 to July 2021, with approximately 22,890 units sold. Fortunately, as of July 23, 2021, no accidents or casualties have been reported.
In fact, recalls due to the risk of rivets falling off are not new. As early as 2013, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission recalled children's puzzles made in China due to the risk of rivets falling off.
The recalled products are Ryan's Room brand Spin-A-Mals Farm puzzles and Spin-A-Mals Safari puzzles, which are made of wood and suitable for children over 12 months old. There are about 4,000 puzzles. The puzzles include colorful rivet rectangular plates, detachable gears and a variety of cartoon animals. At that time, the United States received four reports of rivets separating from the puzzles, but there were no personal injury accidents.
Young children often do not know clearly what they can eat and what they cannot eat. If they touch some small parts, such as rivets, building blocks, paper clips, etc., they will put them in their mouths. This can easily cause choking or suffocation by blocking the throat and trachea. Therefore, the falling of rivets needs to be taken seriously by merchants.
There are many reasons for rivet falling off. For example, the contact area between the parts and the puzzle is too small, resulting in a loose connection; too little glue or improper glue mixing, resulting in a loose bond.
Jigsaw puzzles with rivets can be found everywhere on platforms such as Amazon and Wish. Therefore, sellers need to strengthen product quality inspection when selecting products, and can use professional testing agencies to ensure that products meet standard requirements. In addition, different countries and platforms will have different regulations and standards, so sellers also need to pay close attention to developments in this area. puzzle asphyxia |
