Nearly half of Brits won't shop on non-English websites

On June 21, according to a survey commissioned by Weglot to OpinionWay , many British consumers are gradually moving away from cross-border online shopping due to many factors.

It is reported that the survey involved 1,000 British consumers, among which 72% of the British were worried about shopping on websites suspected of fraud , damaged or delayed delivery of goods , and 68% of the respondents were worried about customs issues. These are important factors that discourage British people from shopping overseas.

In addition, another 61% of British people said that one of the biggest challenges they face when shopping online is language communication, and 49% of respondents clearly stated that they would not shop on non-English websites.

However, language barriers are not enough to dissuade all British people from trying cross-border online shopping. 68% of British people still regularly shop at international e-commerce stores other than well-known brands such as Amazon, and 52% of consumers believe that the prices of international sellers are more attractive .

In addition to price, other reasons for choosing to shop at non-Amazon brands include that there are some products that cannot be found on Amazon (28%) , other online stores can complete delivery faster (27%) , and it is safer to buy directly from the brand website (17%).

The survey also pointed out that 50% of British consumers are tired of shopping in the same e-commerce market every time, and even 59% plan to try shopping in other international online stores in the next six months .

However, there is a large age gap among those who have this intention. Among those aged 18-34 , 86% said they frequently shop on global e-commerce platforms, while this proportion is only 49 % among those aged 50 and above .

On the contrary, when it comes to the question of whether to choose local online stores for shopping, 23% of British people over 50 years old will insist on shopping in local online stores, while in the 18-34 age group, only 4% will insist on shopping in local online stores.

In addition, the survey shows that clothing (52%) and books/video games (40%) are the most popular categories of cross-border online shopping.

In response to the survey's conclusions, Weglot CEO Augustin Prot said: Although it is difficult to prevent the emergence of fake websites and avoid order delays, merchants can adjust the presentation of their online store products to win the favor of consumers, such as localizing product displays and breaking down language barriers. In addition, they can also use some technological means to provide consumers with customized services and personalized experiences .
