As some stores in Brazil closed, e-commerce sales in the country continued to accelerate in April, up 69% compared to the same period in 2020, according to the Mastercard SpendingPulse report .
Among them , the home appliance sector is the fastest growing sector in Brazil's e-commerce , with a year-on-year growth of 122%. On the other hand, sales performance in industries such as fuel, supermarkets, furniture, personal and household products, and pharmaceuticals was lower.
Physical store sales in Brazil increased by 49% compared to 2020, with the exception of the automotive, building materials, restaurant and bed and bath sectors. The clothing sector saw the largest expansion, up 125% compared to April 2020.
According to Estanislau Bassols, General Manager of Mastercard Brazil , this market trend is directly related to the pandemic . "The still high unemployment rate and the closure of some commercial establishments due to the pandemic have affected retail sales. The year-on-year growth rate shows a significant increase, as we have overcome the significant decline in retail sales last year . However , this is a statistical effect due to the number of establishments that remained closed last year," the executive said.
65% of Brazilians have purchased goods on foreign websites and apps
Cross-border e-commerce has become a reality. More and more American and Chinese websites offer products whose online stores are translated into Portuguese. The prices are in many cases lower than local Brazilian prices, and the shipping costs and delivery times are satisfactory to Brazilian consumers . More and more Brazilian consumers are choosing online cross-border shopping .
According to research by the Brazilian Retail and Consumer Association ( SBVC) , compared to 12 months ago, the categories Brazilians buy the most on international websites are electronics ( 36%), beauty (29%), women’s accessories (29%) and smartphone accessories (29%), among which “Shopee” (29%) is the main website consumer preference, followed by Amazon (25%) and AliExpress (18%).
According to SBVC, the growth in purchases through apps (70%) is evident because users feel it is easier to make a purchase. Following the consumer journey, 87% of respondents meet delivery times and 85% agree to wait up to 45 days for delivery to their address in Brazil. Online Shopping E-commerce Brazil |
