68% of American consumers prefer same-day delivery, with clothing and electronics becoming popular

Recently, when an agency conducted a conversion rate survey on 1,047 shoppers, 68% of consumers said that fast delivery, especially same-day delivery service, would prompt them to buy more goods online.

In fact, same-day shipping is a major hurdle for sellers to overcome. According to January 2021 data, more than a third (36%) of online shoppers have completed same-day shipping on their online purchases in the past six months.

Additionally, 26% of shoppers in a February 2021 omnichannel survey said they had ordered from Target or Best Buy's online store in the past six months and had the goods shipped the same day.

In fact, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many stores have been closed, prompting more and more consumers to shop online, which has led to a surge in online orders, adding pressure on carriers to deliver packages. Data shows that as of April 2020, the number of e-commerce packages increased by nearly 60% year-on-year, but shipping companies only delivered nearly 60% of online packages on time, which means that their package delivery rate is very low.

Survey data shows that even for orders from Amazon.com , the estimated delivery dates for sellers of non-essential goods are within the next few weeks or even months.

The data in the table above shows that online discussions about same-day delivery of cosmetics and personal care products increased by 44%, especially related social media, blogs and customer reviews. In addition, discussions about same-day delivery of clothing increased by 154% and discussions about same-day delivery of electronics increased by 321%.

As of the first quarter of 2021, more and more businesses have begun to implement same-day delivery, such as Instacart, DoorDash, and Shipt. Recently, health and wellness chain GNC Inc. also announced that it will soon provide same-day delivery services with Shipt.

In addition, clothing and home furnishings sellers account for a higher proportion of delivery ads. As of February 2021, 5.9% of home furnishings and furniture retail advertisers use "same-day delivery" in search text ads, an increase from 1.1% in February 2020 to 2017 levels, according to data from paid search tracking provider Adthena.
