The global sleepwear industry will be worth more than $18 billion in 2027

Recently, market research firm NPD Group said: In the year ending January 2021, pajamas priced at more than $50 grew three times faster than the total pajamas market. In 2019, the global pajamas industry was worth more than $10 million and is expected to reach more than $18 million by 2027.

During the pandemic, people spent most of their time at home, and sleepwear sales surged. As the lockdown is gradually relaxed, the sleepwear market is still in its golden age and may even become part of the new normal.

Searches for pajamas on the shopping app Liketoknow peaked in the last three months of 2020. It had more than 200,000 unique queries for the term. A spokesperson for the company said shoppers were looking for "silk pajamas," "pajama sets" and "satin pajamas" — all of which saw triple-digit month-over-month growth last year and remain the most searched for today.

Lorna Hall of London-based fashion forecasting company WGSN has spoken of a “skin hunger” for this change . “Many of us crave touch, so tactile fabrics are becoming very important because they mimic touch in some way,” Hall said. Silk, satin and plush are all fabrics that meet this need.

A Liketoknow spokesperson said: “Our customers continue to appreciate cosy styles, with searches for loungewear, suits, robes and home bedding all high since lockdown began last year.

As Paris Fashion Week showed, their designers brought pajama-inspired garments to the runway , and Fendi's wide-leg pants and dresses were also among the "silk, satin, easy-to-wear, pajama-like garments." It's not just about bedtime anymore , people's clothing needs have changed.

Hall thinks the pajama craze will endure post-pandemic, supported by designers creating sleepwear-inspired going-out wear. “When you have the luxury of sleepwear, it’s hard to go back,” she says .

Research and analysis show that the pajamas market is still on the rise, and people's clothing needs are shifting towards comfort. High-end fabrics will continue to be popular, and the same is true for other comfort products.
