Sales surged by more than 20% as dust storms boosted the popularity of Korean cleaning products

According to the Global Times, smog and dust weather reappeared in various parts of South Korea from March 29 to 30, and many regions urgently adopted measures to reduce particulate matter emissions. As the saying goes, "You can never wake up a person who pretends to be asleep", many mainstream media in South Korea have been reporting that the dust "came from China".

 


As yellow dust "from China" swept across South Korea , the concentration of fine dust soared rapidly, and the demand and sales of cleaning products in the cosmetics industry also continued to increase.

 

Olive Young, Korea's No. 1 health and beauty store , said on the 8th that from March 1 to April 7, sales of facial cleansers and oral products increased by about 21% and 27% respectively compared to the previous year. In particular, this year's sales are different from previous years due to the long-term use of masks.

 

According to data released by Olive Young, as the concentration of floating dust increases, Korean consumers' need for pore cleaning has greatly increased. In the cleaning product group, sales of cleansing foam increased by about 26%, exceeding the overall growth rate of the product group .


In addition, as "mask beauty" that adds makeup to the corners of the eyes has become a new trend, sales of makeup for eyes and lips have increased by about 25% . Along with this, the trend of cleansing products that are less irritating to the skin, such as soothing and weakly acidic products, has continued into this year.

 


As for oral products, oral cleansers, which grew rapidly due to the COVID-19 pandemic last year, still showed strong strength. Due to the increasing attention to oral health, including bad breath, caused by wearing masks, in addition to mouthwash and oral spray, sales of dental floss and toothbrushes soared by about 30%, and the entire oral management product group achieved synchronous growth.


Sales of lens cleaning liquids also increased by about 16% as more people sought to manage dry eyes caused by fine dust .

 

Last year, the problem of fine dust and sandstorms in South Korea was not serious, so the sales of related products were similar to the previous year . However, due to the sharp increase in fine dust this year, the popularity of related products is expected to continue to rise for a period of time.
