Consumer in-app spending grew 40% in Q1 2021

App Annie's survey results show that smartphone users used an average of 36 applications in the second half of 2018, and 46 applications in the second half of 2020 , which shows the impact of the epidemic on applications.


According to the latest data from App Annie , in- app purchase spending on iOS and Google Play reached $32 billion in the first quarter of 2021 , an increase of approximately $9 billion compared to the first quarter of 2020 , or approximately 40% growth.


 


In addition, the total downloads of the two app stores, iOS and Google Play, reached 31 billion times this quarter, an increase of 10%. From the figure below, it can be seen that the downloads on Google Play are significantly higher than those on iOS.



 

The coronavirus pandemic has seen a significant increase in app usage, with overall searches for sleep apps in the UK up 104% and Gen Z spending 102% more time on financial apps, for example.


In terms of downloads, social, utility and financial apps performed the best on Google Play, while on iOS, it was games, finance and social apps.


In terms of spending, Games , Social, and Entertainment apps performed strongest on Google Play ; while on iOS, Games , Entertainment, and Video apps had the highest spending.


App Annie also released a “Breakout Apps” chart showing the apps that saw the fastest quarter-over-quarter growth in the first quarter of this year compared to the fourth quarter of 2020.


 

In terms of downloads and MAU , Signal stood out in the first quarter of 2021 , followed closely by Telegram.


Speaking of popular applications, we have to mention gaming applications. It is understood that in the first quarter, gamers downloaded about 1 billion games per week, and consumers spent as much as $22 billion.


Most of the spending by gamers was done through the App Store , with spending reaching $13 billion, up 30% year-over-year ; consumers spent $9 billion on Google Play , up 35%. Consumer spending on mobile games is expected to reach $120 billion in 2021 .


For sellers, those who have the need can consider launching their own applications; even if they do not launch applications, as the proportion of mobile devices increases, it is necessary to optimize the website for mobile devices.
