As the e-commerce boom continues, multiple logistics operators have launched freight services in Indonesia

Like other Asia-Pacific countries, Indonesia experienced unprecedented growth in its e-commerce market last year when the coronavirus pandemic emerged , with online sales soaring 37% to $25 billion, according to GlobalData.

To meet the growing demand for e-commerce , Singapore-based e-commerce company J&T Express announced this week that it has launched a dedicated cargo operation in Indonesia to add to its charter network.

Currently, the company 's 15-tonne B737-300 is operating from Budiarto Airport near Jakarta to Medan , Batam and Tanjung Pinang.

“All cities and islands in Indonesia will be able to enjoy next-day deliveries using the new all-freighter aircraft, improving the delivery experience,” J&T said.

The additions to the company ’s fleet will help e-commerce players in Indonesia meet consumer needs more efficiently.

In February, many experts predicted that cross-border e-commerce in Southeast Asia would shift more toward ocean freight, given current high air freight rates and new demand for large items such as office equipment and furniture online .

Taiwan -based 3PL Dimerco has also been busy preparing more containers to become one of the first operators of Indonesia’s new e-commerce bonded logistics center.

This will help sellers reduce storage costs for importers and exporters and allow re-export of goods for up to three years without paying taxes.

Dimerco said it had started operations at Indonesia’s “first and only” e-commerce PLB in Bekasi, near Jakarta, Indonesia , which has a throughput of more than 150,000 units per day and is operated by Dimerco’s local subsidiary Uniair Cargo.

The 3PL noted: “The 10,000 square meter bonded warehouse will provide customers with integrated multimodal transport services and bring significant benefits, including faster e-commerce delivery and lower costs.

Dimerco added that the delivery time for domestic deliveries is 1-3 days, while the normal delivery time is 14 days. Since there is no need to pay customs duties and taxes in advance, customs clearance can be faster through this channel , which is also an advantage of multimodal transport.
