Walmart Canada to spend $500 million to upgrade online business after closing 6 stores

According to foreign media reports, Walmart Canada recently closed six stores and spent 500 million Canadian dollars to upgrade more than half of its remaining stores and improve its online business.

 

Walmart said it will close three stores in Ontario, two stores in Alberta and one store in Newfoundland and Labrador. Workers affected will be offered jobs at other nearby Walmart stores.

 

At the same time, Walmart Canada also said it would invest C$500 million in its online business, including opening the retailer's first automated market fulfillment centre inside the Scarborough West Walmart Supercentre.

 

It is reported that the construction of the business has already begun, where you can see automatic online grocery picking and distribution as well as automatic kiosks, which will be used as vending machines for online grocery orders.

 

Walmart Canada president and CEO Horacio Barbeito said the company wants to modernize every aspect of its business by focusing on stores and serving customers "in more ways."

 

Walmart will also invest in more store upgrades, including repairs , painting , lighting, signage and improvements to employee break rooms. The company is also adjusting the layout of select stores, improving pickup spaces for online orders in its e-commerce stores, and converting stores in Calgary and Kitchener, Ontario, into supercenters.

 

The upgrade is part of the retailer's $3.5 billion investment to improve online and in-store shopping programs over the next five years .

 

"When customers choose to shop in our stores, we do everything we can to ensure they get the best and most modern experience possible , " Sam Wankowski, chief operating officer of Walmart Canada , said in a statement .

 

Walmart is focusing on the development of e-commerce, investing in the development of online businesses in various stores, developing online automated fulfillment centers, and improving Walmart's supply chain to help its e-commerce development reach a higher level.
