The epidemic has brought "wealth on wheels", and Dubai bicycle e-commerce Cycle Souq's sales have increased fivefold

Cycle Souq said that since the global outbreak of the epidemic, its bicycle and accessories sales have increased significantly, increasing fivefold year-on-year. It said it has "experienced unprecedented demand for bicycles."

Throughout 2020, we have seen high demand for bicycles around the world, with demand surging as anxiety about public transport increased and people wanted to stay fit during lockdown.

The bicycle market has largely witnessed growth in adult bicycles, with Cycle Souq seeing a 170% increase in adult bicycle sales since March 2020. In addition, sales of children's bicycles and scooters have also increased by 54%.

A spokesperson for the bicycle market said: "Starting from April last year, improving the overall health and happiness of the family quickly became everyone's top concern, which led to a significant increase in online sales of our products." Unlike indoor gyms, cycling is seen as a 'safe' way to exercise, and people like to exercise outdoors and maintain social distance.

The high demand for bicycles in overseas markets has also boosted China's bicycle exports. According to Chinese customs statistics, China's bicycle exports have achieved five consecutive months of month-on-month growth from April to August last year. The export value in the second and third quarters was US$807 million and US$1.1 billion respectively , which is the first time since 1995 that the export value of bicycles in a single quarter has exceeded US$1 billion. The veteran domestic bicycle manufacturer "Phoenix" said that the bicycle orders on hand have been scheduled until July this year.

Cycle Souq said they have noticed market demand outside the UAE and are looking for opportunities to expand their international footprint in the Middle East, planning to start in Oman and then expand to more Middle Eastern countries. Cycle Souq said that as more and more consumers realize the benefits of cycling, demand for bicycles will continue after the epidemic.
