Indonesia's halal food imports increase despite spending of $173 billion

Indonesia is the largest Islamic country in the world, but to meet its needs, halal food in the region still relies on imports.

Indonesian Vice President Ma'ruf Amin said : "Indonesia still has to rely on imports to meet domestic halal food demand, so the government is currently developing the halal product industry. "

“Until now, Indonesia, as the country with the largest Muslim population in the world , has only been a consumer of halal food . But as a global player , we have to import to meet the demand, he said during the webinar .

Ma'ruf Amin explained that in 2018, Indonesia spent US$173 billion on halal food and beverages, accounting for 12.6% of the world's halal food share.

On the other hand, the global halal market has great potential . In 2018, the consumption of global halal products reached 2.2 trillion US dollars, and it is expected to reach 3.2 trillion US dollars by 2024.

Ma'ruf Amin said that based on these data , it is not difficult to see that now is the time for Indonesia to establish and strengthen the halal products industry . The short-term goal is to meet the domestic demand for halal products, and in the long run, to become a global player by increasing exports .

"Currently, the development of the halal products industry is one of the key areas of Islamic economic and financial development in Indonesia. The development of the halal products industry is not only aimed at halal products themselves, but also aims to promote domestic industrial development , create more employment opportunities and encourage entrepreneurship, " he added.

In addition, the development of the halal products industry aims to enable small and medium-sized enterprises to participate in the global halal industry chain , and all relevant companies in East Java must seize the opportunity .

As we all know, since the issuance of Presidential Decree No. 28 of 2020 on the National Shariah Economic and Financial Committee (KNEKS), Indonesia has entered a new stage of Islamic economic and financial development .

According to the presidential regulation , the development of Islamic economy and finance should focus on four areas, namely the development of the halal products industry , the development of the Islamic financial industry , the development of Islamic social funds , and the development and expansion of Islamic law business.
