Apple becomes the largest player in Japan's mobile phone market! Demand for peripheral accessories is rising

According to a report by market research firm IDC (International Data Corporation), Japan's smartphone shipments in the fourth quarter of 2020 were approximately 11.43 million units. 52.6% of them were Apple phones , and shipments increased by 8.3% .

This means that more than half of the smartphones sold in Japan are iPhones. It should be noted that Apple does not disclose the number of iPhones and Macs sold , so all of these figures are estimates from IDC.

As the sales of smartphones, represented by Apple, increase, the Japanese people's demand for mobile phone-related peripheral accessories will also rise. After all, starting with the iPhone 12 series, Apple phones will not include accessories in the phone packaging. Tempered films, mobile phone cases, charging heads and other products are also essential accessories.

According to more specific estimates, Japan 's smartphone shipments in the fourth quarter of 2020 were 11.432 million units, up 10.6% from the same period last year .

The total number of iPhones shipped in Japan was 6.015 million units, an increase of 13.8% over the same period last year .

Sharp is the second largest company in Japan after Apple, with shipments of 1.414 million units and a market share of 12.4%.

Kyocera ranked third with a 7.0% share and 801,000 units shipped.

Samsung ranked fourth with shipments of 781,000 units and a market share of 6.8%.

Sony ranked fifth with sales of 73.2 units and a market share of 6.4%, closely following Samsung.

By the end of 2020, total global smartphone sales had fallen by 12%. However, Japan 's mobile phone shipments for the whole year of 2020 bucked the trend and grew by 5.9% to 33.028 million units , a unique situation in Japan amid a general decline in smartphone sales due to the coronavirus pandemic and global supply chain disruptions .

Of course, this is also due to the introduction of the "separation plan" in 2019, which caused many suppliers to reduce their shipment plans . On the other hand, in addition to launching 5G-compatible models in 2020, relatively cheap 4G models such as the iPhone SE (2nd generation) were also launched in large quantities . The increase in Apple's mobile phone shipments also indirectly promoted the increase in Japanese smartphone shipments .

According to the Financial Times, in 2020 Apple surpassed its competitors Samsung and Huawei and finally became the world's largest smartphone distributor again after a lapse of 4 years.
