Data shows that Russia's e-commerce logistics market showed strong growth in 2020, with freight volume reaching 883 million pieces, an increase of 35% over 2019.
Compared with 2019, the share of Russian postal and logistics companies has decreased, and the share of online stores' own logistics services has increased significantly. Of the parcels delivered in 2020, 65% (or 576 million items) were completed by the stores' own logistics services.
Among them, the logistics services of Russian e-commerce Wildberries accounted for 34%, and Ozon accounted for 8%. Researchers pointed out that the freight volume from these e-commerce platforms is calculated based on the number of orders, not the number of shipments.
The most popular delivery methods are courier pickup points and delivery lockers. Data Insight estimates that consumers can pick up their orders through more than 50,000 order points, including courier pickup points (39%), delivery lockers (34%) and retail pickup points (27%).
Data shows that in the first half of 2020, 68% of parcels were delivered through express pickup points and express lockers. 90% of the parcels on the Wildberries platform are delivered through express pickup points, and 10% are delivered to the door.
After the outbreak of the epidemic, due to epidemic restrictions and home isolation, the share of home delivery exceeded that of express pickup points in April 2020.
Analysts explained that this is because 97% of stores have home delivery services . 97% of large supermarkets and 90% of other stores allow consumers to pick up goods from their own store pickup points or warehouses. Data shows that the market size of express pickup points, express lockers and home delivery services is expected to reach 27.5 billion rubles in 2020, reaching 109 million freight volumes. Since 2018, its cumulative average annual growth rate has reached 63%.
The epidemic has also had varying degrees of impact on logistics companies. As of the fall of 2020, more than 100 companies provided logistics delivery services in the Moscow region. Data shows that as of August and September 2020, 66% of logistics work in Russia has returned to normal, while 21% of logistics companies are unable to sign contracts with new customers due to a lack of warehouses and personnel.
