Coles in China

Australian supermarket giant Coles has applied for registration of its Chinese trademark "客澳市". When searching for "客澳市" through Tianyancha, it was found that a company named "客澳市交易(上海)有限公司" was established on December 6, 2019, and is 100% controlled by a company named "ColesExportAsiaLimited". Its business scope includes retail, import and export (except for goods and technology import and export prohibited by the state or involving administrative approval), production, and food sales of daily necessities, plastic products, and household goods.

A search on the China Trademark Network with the keyword "客澳市" revealed 9 trademark application records, all of which were filed on October 23, 2019, and the applicant's name was "COLES SUPER MARKETSA USTRALIAPTY LTD." Of the 9 applications, 3 were in the "awaiting substantive examination" status, and the other 6 were in the "awaiting acceptance" status.

Coles does not plan to open any physical stores in China, but will sell frozen beef to China through e-commerce, wholesalers and local supermarket chains online and offline. If the beef strategy is successful, Coles will also consider adding other categories of products, such as milk powder and oat products.
