Average spending per person is $567! This year's Black Friday and Cyber Monday may set a new record

Americans are about to face a busy week. Millions of people will travel for the Thanksgiving holiday, followed by Black Friday.

But days before the official start of the holiday shopping season, the Commerce Department reported that U.S. retail spending fell last month after six straight months of gains.

Just when everyone thought that this year's Black Friday might not be as good as expected, the Deloitte survey report these two days gave everyone a shot in the arm.

Deloitte surveyed 1,200 consumers between October 19 and October 25.

The survey shows that this year, American consumers plan to spend an average of $567 during Black Friday and Cyber Monday, up 13% from last year and setting a new record. About 84% of shoppers plan to stick to the budget they set in September. In order to stay within their spending limits, many consumers plan to do most of their shopping during Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Four in ten people hope to complete their shopping during this period.

Matt Adams, head of retail strategy at Deloitte Consulting , said the survey results were a bit unexpected because when the company released its back-to-school shopping season survey in the summer, consumers were cautious about spending due to concerns about the economy and inflation.

The survey also showed that two-thirds of consumers plan to shop during Thanksgiving week, an increase from last year. Adams said people are looking for deals, with 81% of consumers in the Chicago area saying they will shop on deals days, up from 52% last year.

In addition, the National Retail Federation ( NRF) also predicts that holiday spending in November and December will reach record levels. A joint report from NRF and Prosper Insights & Analytics shows that this year, an estimated 182 million Americans plan to spend from Thanksgiving to Cyber Monday, the most since 2017.

Black Friday will be the peak of shopping, with surveys showing 72% of people planning to shop on this day; while Cyber Monday is the second most popular shopping day, attracting 39% of consumers.
