In the cross-border circle, it is not uncommon for operations managers to quit their jobs and start their own business. However, recently, the news that "a cross-border e-commerce operations manager with an annual salary of 400,000 quit his job to start his own business" has caused heated discussions in the industry.
After failing to get a salary increase, the operations manager quit his job in anger and started his own business
During the peak recruitment season of September and October , many job seekers are seizing the opportunity to interview and try to land a job in this wave of recruitment. However, during the peak recruitment season that just passed, a resignation sharing post by a Shenzhen cross-border e-commerce operator went viral.
Mr. Ma has a classic quote about employees leaving: If you don’t get paid enough, you will feel wronged. The reason why this operator left was also related to “money”. It is reported that this operator has three years of experience, an annual salary of more than 400,000 yuan, and can help the company achieve more than one million yuan in sales every month. Perhaps he felt that his salary did not match the value he created, so he asked his boss for a salary increase, but was not allowed, so he decided to resign and start his own business and open his own store.
After a month of preparation, he started his solo journey.
I thought it would resonate with many people, but the comment section was full of doubts. Many people thought it was just a traffic-generating post, and that it was ultimately a training post to make money. Some people even directly mocked: "Where can I sign up for the course? I want to learn."
Many people complained that the story was not well written and used data to prove their rational analysis.
According to the above annual salary, the salary of the operator is at least 33,300 yuan per month. However, an experienced Amazon developer said that his monthly salary was only 20,000 yuan, and the highest was more than 40,000 yuan, and that was under the premise that the new product sales reached more than 5 million yuan and the profit was close to 2 million yuan.
Some people even said that if an operator's monthly sales were only over 1 million yuan, it would not be enough to pay his annual salary of over 400,000 yuan.
An industry insider with many years of cross-border e-commerce experience said that if the sales of 1 million are calculated at 8 percentage points, the net profit is 80,000 yuan, "This is already a very good situation, and it will only get worse under the current market conditions." According to the monthly salary of this operator, it is equivalent to one person taking away 3 percentage points of the net profit. "The boss is already generous enough. After all, he bears 100% of the risk, and it is normal for him to take more than half of the net profit."
Another experienced cross-border e-commerce operator also said that his salary was quite high for his performance . If the store's profit was more than 1 million, it would be understandable that he was dissatisfied. "Our company has a sales volume of 1 million, and the operation commission is only 5,000-6,000 yuan."
Some people disagreed with him leaving the company to start his own business: "The company's monthly sales of 1 million yuan is the result of the combined efforts of various resources. If you work alone, you may not be able to achieve this scale, and you may not even earn this salary by then."
But putting all that aside, as an operator, if your monthly salary exceeds 30,000, would you choose to quit your job and work on your own? (Welcome to leave a message to discuss.)
The average monthly salary in Shenzhen is 8-15k, with the highest in Nanshan District
For cross-border e-commerce companies, operation positions occupy an important position, so the salary is not low, especially in Shenzhen, where cross-border e-commerce companies gather, which is much higher than other provinces and cities. If you want to do cross-border e-commerce operations, Shenzhen is a good choice.
According to Zhiyouji data, in Shenzhen, the average monthly salary for Amazon operations is 12.7K, of which the majority earn 8-15K, accounting for more than 60%. Salaries vary depending on education, work experience, and work area. For example, based on experience, the average salary for fresh graduates is 8.6K, based on education, the average salary for college graduates is 11.6K, and based on region, the average salary in Longgang District is 13.3K.
If the condition is limited to 1-3 years of work experience, the average salary will be lowered to 11.2K/month, but the proportion of people earning 8-15K per month will increase to 79.8%. People with a monthly salary of 3-5K only account for 0.1%, which is very small.
It is also worth noting that, overall, the overall salary of Amazon operations in Shenzhen is going down. This trend has started since last year. Amazon operations with 1-3 years of experience have felt this change earlier. Data shows that the salaries of this part of operations have begun to shrink in 2021.
However, an interesting phenomenon is that according to regional statistics, the highest salary for Shenzhen Amazon operators with 1-3 years of experience is not in Longgang District where cross-border e-commerce companies are concentrated, but in Nanshan District.
Look to Shenzhen for cross-border e-commerce in Guangdong, and look to Longgang for cross-border e-commerce in Shenzhen. Data shows that more than 3,600 cross-border e-commerce companies are gathered in Longgang District, Shenzhen. Leading companies such as the Four Young Masters of South China City (Savitech, Aoktech Technology, Tongtuo Technology, and Youkeshu) and the Five Tigers of Bantian (Lens Technology, Zehui, Baoshijia, Gonglang, and Jiandan.com) are all here.
However, the average salary for Amazon operators with 1-3 years of experience in Longgang District is only 11.3K, which is almost the same as that in Bao'an District (11.2K), Futian District (11.3K) and Luohu District (11.5K), while the average salary in Nanshan District can reach 12.5K.
As we all know, Nanshan District is a strong science and technology district and innovation highland in Shenzhen. As the science and technology innovation center of Shenzhen, Nanshan District has gathered many high-tech enterprises. Now these enterprises are gradually exerting their strength online to expand sales channels and expand the global influence of their brands. These enterprises are not only strong in science and technology, but also have strong funds, so the salary given to operations will naturally be much higher. And from the perspective of the average salary of the whole city, Nanshan District has always been the highest among all districts.
Entrepreneurship has high risks and high returns, and operators are very entangled
Statistics show that 80% of startups survive no longer than three years, less than 7% survive for five years, and less than 2% survive for more than 10 years. In other words, if we only look at the statistics of registered companies, the success rate of entrepreneurship may be only 10%.
The success rate of entrepreneurship is too low, so more and more people choose to take a class instead of taking the risk of starting a business. However, the cross-border circle is an exception. Many operators have a "solo dream", and it is not uncommon to see operators starting businesses within the circle, especially Amazon operations.
There are two main reasons that motivate them to work alone: one is to earn more money, and the other is the age crisis.
Although the success rate of entrepreneurship is extremely low, once successful, the return rate is very high, and this is also true in the cross-border circle. Someone has done the math: if you work for a boss, assuming a monthly sales of 200,000, a gross profit margin of 15%, and a commission of 5% of the gross profit, you will get $1,500. If you work alone, you don't need to consider the commission point, all the gross profit is yours, so even if the monthly sales can only reach $20,000, which is only one-tenth of the sales in the company, you can still get $3,000 with the same gross profit margin.
It is precisely because of this that the story of Amazon operating independently will continue to be played out in the cross-border circle.
According to Marketplace Pulse research, more than 2,000 new sellers have joined Amazon's 21 global markets every day since 2016. Many of them must have quit their jobs to start their own businesses.
Another issue is the age crisis that has always existed in the cross-border industry. Cross-border e-commerce operations are not technical positions, so the older you are, the more popular you are.
Data from Zhiyouji also indirectly proves this point. When querying the salary situation of Amazon operators in the past year, it can count 24,825 samples of Amazon operators with 1-3 years of experience, 6,948 samples of those with 3-5 years of experience, 2,076 samples of those with 5-10 years of experience, and only 35 samples of those with more than 10 years of experience.
However, it is completely different for fields such as finance which require experience. Within 10 years of experience, the longer the working years, the more samples that can be counted. |
