42% of e-commerce sellers have already used AI!

More than two in five (42%) Australian businesses are currently using artificial intelligence to support their e-commerce operations, according to new research from PayPal .

The company's 2023 E-Commerce Index also found that 43% of Australian consumers would be willing to use artificial intelligence to help them shop online.

Currently , only 18% of Australian consumers have used generative AI tools, but this rises to 32% among those under 40 .

Today, the top six uses of AI for Australian e-commerce sellers include writing product descriptions (15%), providing personalised product recommendations (15%), creating visual design elements (14%), managing customer returns (14%), responding to social media comments or messages (13%) and detecting fake or automatically generated reviews (12%).

PayPal Australia general manager Andrew Toone said the findings showed AI was already a part of everyday life for many people.

AI will provide consumers with powerful tools to help them shop smarter . This includes finding the best price , ordering the perfect size, and optimizing and tracking shipping and delivery across multiple stores.

What’s more, AI can provide personalized product recommendations that fit a consumer’s personal taste and budget. This tailored approach will help consumers find their ideal merchandise while creating a more engaging and enjoyable shopping experience.

However, the report also pointed out people's concerns about the risks of artificial intelligence. 42% of consumers and 29% of businesses are worried that certain vulnerabilities may cause artificial intelligence to make inaccurate recommendations.

Meanwhile, 34% of businesses are concerned that AI will lead to more sophisticated cybercrime, and 47% of consumers are concerned that AI will be used for fraud.

"Using AI, hackers can easily create a variety of programs that these hackers can then use to trick people into handing over their personal or financial information and bypass traditional, rules-based fraud checks that businesses might have in place, " Thune said.
