SHEIN ranks second in the number of users in Spain, second only to Amazon

Recently, Kantar, a British market research and consulting company, conducted a survey on the number of users of Spanish e-commerce platforms.

The survey shows that during the survey period ( June 2022 to May 2023 ) , the number of people who bought fashion online in Spain was 18.18 million . More than 4.85 million people bought clothes, shoes, accessories or home textiles through Amazon , which shows the status of Amazon .

But Amazon is not alone. SHEIN ’s exponential growth in recent years is threatening its dominance . SHEIN ’s user base rose 40% compared to the previous period (from June 2021 to May 2022) , making it the only platform to see an increase . In contrast, Amazon’s user growth has stagnated.

In terms of specific data , SHEIN now has 4.48 million shoppers, only 370,000 less than Amazon . But Amazon landed in the Spanish market in 2011 , nearly ten years earlier than SHEIN . In this way, the gap of 370,000 seems to be insignificant .

SHEIN's user growth trend is not only in sharp contrast with Amazon , but also leaves Zalando behind. Although the number of users of this platform ranks third, it has experienced user loss and the number is only half of SHEIN , about 2.3 million .

It is worth mentioning that two platforms under Alibaba are on the list. Aliexpress ranks fourth with 2.3 million users ; and Miravia , a platform launched in Spain last year , has gained nearly 200,000 users during this period .

Also on the list are Veepee and Showroomprive, with 640,000 and 138,000 users respectively, and Asos, which has more than 420,000 fashion shoppers in Spain and ranks eighth.

Temu did not appear on the list because it just entered this new market in April this year . However, judging from the current situation, it is not too long before we see this platform on the list again.

Last year, trade normalization interrupted the development of many pure-play e-commerce platforms , causing some companies , such as Asos and Zalando, to issue profit warnings and adjust their development plans in the hope of development.

Fortunately, the proportion of Spanish consumers buying fashion online has increased year by year, reaching 21.1% last year. Although it has become slower than in previous years, it has surpassed the UK for the first time and set a new historical high.
