As Halloween approaches, Pinduoduo's Temu product sales exceed 1,000

The epidemic in the United States has gradually subsided, and consumption has slowly returned to pre-epidemic levels. Despite the unprecedented inflation in 40 years, the American tradition of "trick or treat" during Halloween seems to have not changed at all, which hides business opportunities.

As Halloween approaches, the popularity of related products on major platforms continues to rise: the keyword "Halloween decorations" has ranked first in search popularity on Amazon for two consecutive weeks.

The rankings of keywords such as "Halloween women's clothing" and "Halloween outdoor decorations" also rose rapidly in the past two weeks, reaching 21st and 23rd respectively.

On the other hand, although Pinduoduo's overseas version Temu has just been launched not long ago, it has also become popular in the United States due to its ultra-low prices.

The platform's best-selling list shows that a Halloween-style small accessory has sold more than 1,800 units, ranking tenth on the best-selling list, and its price is only $0.41. Several other Halloween-style products have also made it to the best-selling list.

The National Retail Federation said Monday that 69% of consumers plan to celebrate Halloween this year, compared with 65% last year and 68% in 2019.

A survey by the National Retail Federation found that consumers plan to spend an average of about $100 on clothing, candy, decorations and other related products , with total spending expected to reach a record $10.6 billion, of which $710 million will be spent on pets.

The expected increase in Halloween sales is encouraging and shows that the U.S. economy remains strong and consumers are willing to continue spending despite rising shopping costs and inflation.

The survey shows that consumers' spending during Halloween mainly includes candy, house and yard decorations, Halloween costumes, pumpkin carving and attending Halloween parties. As in previous years, one in five people said they would also give their pets a Halloween outfit.

The biggest Halloween expense will continue to be costumes, with combined spending on children’s and adult costumes expected to reach $2.9 billion , the highest level since 2017.

Spending on pets is expected to surpass last year's record high, reaching $710 million.

According to the survey of more than 8,000 respondents, the most popular Halloween costumes in 2022 will still be classics: witch and vampire suits, and for children, Spiderman and princess dresses.

As for pets, most owners said they would dress them up in Halloween pumpkin or hot dog costumes. Pet owners said that online emoticons are their main source of inspiration.

"Social media is playing an increasingly important role in influencing consumer behavior, and Halloween is no exception," said Phil Rister, executive vice president of Prosper Insights. "Younger consumers, especially those under 25, are more likely to look to platforms like Instagram and TikTok for costume inspiration."

Deloitte had predicted that soaring prices would dampen holiday shopping enthusiasm from November to December compared to last year - but in the National Retail Federation's report, nearly half of respondents said they had already started stocking up for Halloween. Among them, 40% chose discount retailers, 36% chose specialty stores, and 31% chose online stores.

For online sellers, they can learn more about the shopping preferences and styles of young people today from social media channels, so as to have a chance to gain an advantage in the sales season before Halloween.
