Recently, the research organization Data Reportal released the latest data showing that TikTok advertising now covers more than 1.02 billion people aged 18 and above, which means that TikTok advertising now covers 22.9% of all adults abroad each month. Compared with the 970.2 million users aged 18 and above announced by Data Reportal in April this year, the coverage has increased by about 50 million users in just the past three months, with an average increase of more than 500,000 users per day.
Kepios' analysis shows that as of July 2022, there are 4.7 billion social media users worldwide, equivalent to 59.0% of the world's total population. According to statistics, the number of social media users worldwide has continued to grow by 227 million in the past year, with an average increase of more than 620,000 users per day.
In addition, GWI data shows that the typical social media user actively uses or visits an average of 7.4 different social platforms per month, and uses social media for an average of nearly 2.5 hours per day. Assuming people sleep 7 to 8 hours a day, people spend about 15% of their waking life using social media. GWI data also shows that 31.2% of respondents aged 16 to 24 said that reading news reports is one of the main reasons they use social media, while this proportion is 35.8% of respondents aged 55 to 64.
The latest UN population data shows that there were 7.98 billion people on Earth in July 2022, an increase of about 66 million people over the past year. Internet users reached 5.03 billion in July 2022, and Internet penetration rose to 63.1%. Current trends suggest that by this time next year, two-thirds of the world's total population should be online, and social media users should reach 60% of the global population before long.
According to data released by Data Reportal, Facebook remains the most widely used social media platform in the world. There are currently seven social media platforms claiming to have more than one billion monthly active users, four of which are owned by Meta.

The global Internet population uses a different social media platform every month, which means there will be a considerable overlap between the user bases and advertising audiences of different platforms. Therefore, marketers do not need to run advertisements on all social media platforms. They only need to focus on one or two larger platforms to reach most social media users.
