Today , dozens of warehouse workers at Amazon's Chicago-area factories held a Christmas Eve strike, demanding that Amazon provide them with better wages and treatment .
According to a worker at Amazon's DLN2 factory , although the warehouse has enough staff , they are all overworked and have not received the bonuses and salary increases they deserve . Amazon not only urges employees to work, but also forces some permanent workers to become temporary workers.
It is reported that these night shift workers ( 1:20 am to 11:50 am ) are demanding a $5 hourly pay raise . According to Amazon , the workers at the two factories DLN2 and DIL3 currently on strike are paid $15.80 per hour .
An Amazon spokesperson said that in order to prevent and control the epidemic, these warehouses used to have 20-minute breaks, but now the breaks have been reduced to 15 minutes.
It is understood that before the strike , the workers submitted a petition to management listing their demands , but they did not receive a response, which led to this strike.
Amazon workers nationwide have accused the company of trying to stifle labor organizing. Last year, Jonathan Bailey, founder of Amazon Workers United , filed a lawsuit with the National Labor Relations Board ( NLRB), claiming that he was detained and interrogated for 90 minutes by an Amazon manager after organizing a strike.
According to NBC, Bailey 's complaint to the NLRB was just one of 37 complaints against Amazon between February 2020 and March 2021. Shortly after the incident , Amazon was accused of illegally preventing an employee in Staten Island from distributing union- related materials in the lounge .
Amazon's internal employees have also filed complaints with the NLRB . In September of this year , the company received complaints from two former Seattle office employees, Maren Costa and Emily Cunningham, who were fired for fighting for the rights of warehouse workers during the outbreak .
Recently, the situation escalated again . On December 10, a tornado in Illinois destroyed the DLI4 warehouse , killing six Amazon employees . For many years, Amazon has not allowed employees to carry mobile phones in warehouses, but relaxed this policy during the epidemic .
However, Amazon has recently been gradually resuming this policy, which resulted in some employees not receiving timely warning information when the National Weather Service issued an emergency alert urging people to take shelter .
In response to the strike, a worker at the Chicago warehouse said they have been working hard to ensure everyone gets their Christmas gift packages and they just want to be treated fairly by Amazon . Amazon Platform strike storehouse tornado |
