Online shopping is becoming popular in Europe, with more than 80% of young people having shopped online

Recently, EUROSTAT , the European Union's statistical office , released data on online shopping in the European Union. It should be noted that the survey results correspond to consumers' online shopping in the first quarter of 2020 or in 2019.

 

The survey results show that in 2020, about 65% of all adults in the EU (16-74 years old) bought/ordered goods or services on the Internet in the 12 months before the survey. Young people aged 25-34 are 2.5 times more likely to use the Internet for shopping (83%) than those aged 65-74 (33%).

 

Online shopping is becoming more common in the EU as the use of the internet spreads across all age groups. Consumers value the accessibility of a wide range of products anytime, anywhere, with the added benefit of good prices. Events such as Black Friday and Cyber ​​Monday are some of the times when online shopping is prioritized.

 

Among all EU regions, the Capital Region of Denmark has the highest propensity to use e-commerce ( 91%) , followed by Midtjylland in Denmark and Utrecht in the Netherlands, both at 90%.

 

In contrast, four regions in Bulgaria had the lowest shares in 2020: Severen tsentralen (25%), Yuzhen tsentralen and Yugoiztochen (both 26%), and Severozapaden (27%).

 

In the 2020 survey, 19% of adults said they had never made an online purchase; the most common response in 11 NUTS1 regions ( regions or federal states ) in the EU was never making an online purchase, including every region in Bulgaria and Romania, Sud and Isole in Italy, Kentriki Ellada in Greece, and Cyprus and Região Autónoma da Madeira in Portugal.

 


Consumers also use the internet for banking. In 2020, 58% of EU adults used online banking in the three months prior to the survey. In terms of e-commerce, the Capital Region of Denmark has the highest share of online banking at 96%.

 

According to the latest data from Finaria, revenue in the European e-commerce market is expected to reach $465 billion this year, a 30% increase from before the pandemic, and is expected to reach $570 billion by 2025.

 


According to data from SimilarWeb, the top ten e-commerce platforms in terms of monthly online visits include Amazon, eBay, Allegro, AliExpress, Wildberries, Zalando, Ozon, Bol.com, Esty and OTTO.
