Sold out in one day! Another product became a big hit

At the end of the year, when sellers are preparing to go on vacation, hot-selling products appear.

Thompson shooting suspect appears in court, another product explodes

The shooting of Brian Thompson, CEO of UnitedHealth Group, unexpectedly led to a wave of hot sales. Usually, such hot sales caused by unexpected events have a very short life cycle. However, this time it seems to be an exception. As this incident continues to develop, various hot products have emerged one after another.

Recently, as shooting suspect Luigi Mangione appeared in court, another product sold out, that is the burgundy crewneck sweater he wore in court.

Someone found out that the sweater was from Nordstrom, a high-end American department store chain, and sold for $62.65 (about 457 yuan) in six colors. Soon, the burgundy sweater that Mangione was wearing was sold out within a day.

However, this wave of buying did not stop because the brand was out of stock. Those who failed to buy the product as they wished began to look for the same product online. According to Google Trends data, after Mangione appeared in court, the search volume of the keyword "Mangione red sweater" in the United States increased significantly.

A foreign netizen joked: "It's not every day that a legal lawsuit triggers a fashion craze."

Sellers in the industry have also noticed this wave of popularity, and some sellers have listed their products. In view of the fact that such products may encounter restrictions on sales on third-party platforms, some sellers have deliberately built independent websites for sales. One seller even completed the construction of an independent website in just a few hours to quickly seize the market opportunity.

In fact, shortly after Thompson was killed, the jacket Mangione was wearing at the shooting scene was sold out.

Now, Mangione, the "suspect" in the shooting, has become a "shopping expert." Not only are the clothes he wears snapped up, but even the accessories he wears have become hot sellers.

According to reports, since the news of the shooting broke, the search volume for a backpack that Mangione carried at the scene has continued to surge. Even though the product has been discontinued, it has not stopped people from paying attention to it.

At present, this case will not be concluded in a short time, so there is a high probability that other hot-selling products will be born in the future. Perhaps this is one of the reasons why many sellers have joined the game. However, this kind of special market heat is not a stable and sustainable conventional business phenomenon, and the products sold are not welcomed by the platform.

In recent days, on the Etsy platform, sales of T-shirts, mugs and other customized products inspired by Mangio's court experience have increased significantly. But soon, some Etsy sellers reported that they received a notice to remove the platform.

Chinese internet celebrities are selling Yiwu toys like crazy in the US, are cross-border sellers also looking to make a move?

There is a decompression toy called "Eye-popping Dragon". When you squeeze it, its cute big eyes will pop out and open. When not playing, it is also a cute desktop decoration. This "Eye-popping Dragon" squeeze toy was originally a zodiac product that was about to become outdated, but it was recently made popular by an Internet celebrity.

Recently, a video blogger named "Daolege" suddenly became popular on the Internet. In the video, "Daolege" carries a backpack and walks around subway cars in the United States, New York's Times Square and other places to promote this "Exploding Eye Dragon" squeeze toy.

Although he lives in the United States, Dao Le Ge doesn't know much English, and he can only say a few simple English words such as "one dollar", "two dollar", "beautiful" and "thank you". However, with such a poor vocabulary, this toy can always be sold.

On a certain video platform, the first video of "Daolege" was released on December 8, 2024, when he had less than 10,000 fans. As of December 27, the "Daolege" account had released 12 videos, and the number of fans increased to 960,000 in just over ten days.

The product link of this toy has been posted in the window of "Daolege", and more than 20,000 pieces have been sold, with a single price of 5.88 yuan, and the shipping place is Jinhua, Zhejiang.

Some suppliers said that due to Dao Le Ge's influence, this product will soon be out of stock. After the keen cross-border sellers caught this market trend, they also prepared to make plans.

The editor found that this product is not unavailable on cross-border e-commerce platforms. Entering the keyword "Dragon Eye Popping" on the Amazon platform will yield a number of results, with prices ranging from $6.99 to $9.99. Obviously, this is much more expensive than what "Daolege" sells. However, many links have sold more than 100 pieces in the past 30 days.

Judging from the purchase price, this product is very cheap. On 1688, the price of one piece with free shipping is in the range of 1.35-1.45 yuan, and the wholesale price in large quantities can only be lower. The store with the highest sales volume sold 776,000 pieces.

If sellers want to sell this product, in addition to considering its market prospects, they must also pay great attention to intellectual property issues. Once infringement occurs, not only will the link be removed, but the account funds will also be restricted. If this happens, the gain will outweigh the loss.

Make a quick buck or long-termism?

In cross-border e-commerce product selection decisions, some sellers tend to adopt a short-term speculative model of "quick in, quick out", attempting to quickly make a profit in the short-term market boom and then withdraw safely; while other sellers firmly adhere to the concept of long-termism and focus on building a stable and sustainable business foundation. Obviously, the sellers of the above products are the former.

Previously, Yien had mentioned in an article that there are some problems and risks in making such products, including short life cycle, tight supply chain, infringement risk, etc.

The popularity of such products is usually short-lived. Once the popularity is over, market demand may drop sharply. If sellers stock up a large amount of goods during the peak of popularity, they may face the problem of inventory backlog.

Moreover, a sudden increase in demand for popular products may lead to supply chain tensions. Suppliers may not be able to provide enough goods in time, or may raise product prices due to insufficient supply.

At the same time, hot products tend to attract many sellers to follow suit and enter the market, which will lead to intensified competition and price wars.

More importantly, some popular products may involve intellectual property issues such as patents, trademarks or copyrights. If sellers do not conduct sufficient intellectual property investigations, they may unknowingly sell infringing products and face legal action and huge compensation.

In view of this, many sellers tend to be cautious about such hot products and will not easily get involved in them. Compared with the fleeting popularity of hot products, they pay more attention to products with long-term and stable market demand.

Because such products can provide more solid and reliable support for their business development, reduce operating risks caused by market fluctuations, and thus ensure that the company has a more stable development trend and sustained profitability in the market.

However, a product that suddenly becomes popular often means that market demand rises sharply in a short period of time, which provides sellers with a window to quickly gain profits. If sellers can seize the opportunity in time and launch products to the market during the peak of popularity, they may gain considerable sales and revenue. Therefore, there are many sellers who are willing to take risks.
