Italy is one of the European countries that is loyal to tradition and Christmas shopping, with 66% of Italians celebrating Christmas. Therefore, previous data showed that 82% of consumers would buy Christmas decorations during the discount season, and 31% would buy Christmas-related clothing.
According to the forecast of the e-commerce observatory Osservatorio, Italian consumers will spend about 1.8 billion euros online during the peak shopping seasons such as Black Friday and Cyber Monday this year, a year-on-year increase of 21% in 2020. Through promotions, sellers can also increase their daily turnover by an average of 6-8 times.
And two-thirds of Italians choose platforms such as Amazon, eBay, and AliExpress for shopping.
In categories such as clothing, IT, electronic products, jewelry, perfume, body care, furniture and some toys, they will be popular with consumers. In particular, technology products, many consumers take advantage of the strong promotions and choose to buy them, so it is expected that such products will grow by 55.18% year-on-year.
Valentina Pontiggia, head of the Politecnico di Milano, said online sales were booming in November and December, and spending during this period will account for 25% of online spending in 2021.
Pontiggia also stressed that Italian retailers now not only set promotional activities on Black Friday and the online shopping day , but will expand the scope of activities. For example, the promotion period of IT and consumer electronics, beauty and cosmetics products will be extended to achieve the purpose of dispersed purchases and avoid network and logistics congestion during the peak season. This trend has been evident since last year.
Especially in this year when supply chains are tight and goods are in short supply, extending the peak shopping season or launching promotional discounts in advance can be considered a way to ease the crisis. At the same time, long-term discount activities can easily stimulate consumers to make multiple purchases during the period, which is also helpful for sellers to increase sales.
In addition, influenced by the concept of sustainable development, the concept of environmental protection has also taken root in the hearts of Italian consumers, with 78% of consumers saying they would give priority to buying products that are good for the environment. Therefore, when sellers select products, environmental protection and sustainability are also a point that needs to be considered.
