Singapore's National Environment Agency ( NEA) today warned consumers not to use ultraviolet (UVC) disinfection devices at home as many homes lack safety features to protect users from UV radiation .
To reduce accidental exposure and health risks, the Singapore Environment Agency advises the public not to purchase any UVC sterilizer products that do not have safety features . The agency also added that UVC-based disinfection equipment should only be used in industrial or commercial settings with safety features and safe operating conditions .
It is understood that such disinfection devices are commonly used to disinfect mobile phones, jewelry and household surfaces. However, if users operate improperly or use unsafe disinfectants, exposure to UVC radiation may cause eye and skin damage. This will include corneal damage, burning sensations and sensitivity to light, as well as redness and peeling of the skin caused by burns .
NEA said that since the outbreak, people's demand for UVC disinfection equipment has continued to grow, and consumers should choose disinfectors with safety features when purchasing such disinfectors for home disinfection .
NEA cited some examples , including portable, tube and tabletop products that contain motion sensors that automatically turn off the bulb when someone approaches . There are also handheld UVC sterilizers that contain gravity sensors , and the bulb automatically turns off when the device is pointed upward to protect the user's eyes.
NEA recommends that users do not expose their skin directly to UVC radiation and avoid looking directly at UVC light sources. At the same time, the agency also urged people who have purchased UVC sterilizers without any safety features to stop using them immediately.
NEA has been working with retailers in Singapore to actively remove unsafe UVC sterilizer products that pose radiation risks . Both offline stores and online retail platforms are advised not to sell unsafe UVC sterilizer products.
According to the editor, platforms including Amazon, Carousell, ezbuy, Qoo10 and Shopee are actively removing related products from their platforms . Currently, about 8,000 unsafe UVC sterilizer product listings have been removed from these platforms . Product Selection Amazon Platform Shopee Platform |
