As consumers gradually return to normal life after the continued social distancing during the pandemic lockdown, the beauty and cosmetics industry is also seeing signs of recovery, with reports showing that sales of color cosmetics and skin care products in the United States are continuing to rise.
Recently, the NPD Group released the sales of the US beauty market in the third quarter of 2021. According to data provided by the NPD Group, in the third quarter, the total revenue of the well-known US beauty industry reached 4.9 billion US dollars, an increase of 25% compared with the same period last year.
In terms of industry segmentation data, sales of color cosmetics products are continuing to grow . Color cosmetics revenue totaled $1.7 billion in the third quarter , up 24% from the same period in 2020. These increases were mainly driven by facial products such as blush, contouring, highlighter , and foundation , all of which grew by double digits in the third quarter .
In the third quarter, sales of skin care products increased by 14% compared with last year , reaching $1.4 billion. During this period, sales of body care products exceeded those of facial products, including rapid growth in sales of shower gel, body lotion and exfoliating products . The performance of body skin care products even exceeded the pre-epidemic level in 2019. In facial skin care , the best performers were serums, lip balms and eye creams .
Sales of fragrances are also growing, as are sales of hair care products. In the third quarter, sales of fragrance products totaled $1.1 billion, up 36% from the same period in 2020. Driven by styling sprays, gels and similar hair styling products, hair care sales in the third quarter of 2021 increased 36% year-on-year to $619.4 million.
Larissa Jensen, beauty industry consultant at NPD Group, said: "Amid many uncertainties, we see the dawn of returning to normal life, which will also help the beauty industry achieve new growth in the future. Fragrance products, in particular, have become the brightest star in the beauty industry, and its growth momentum is expected to continue into the fourth quarter."
At the same time, previous survey results from the NPD Group also showed that beauty products are one of the top 10 physical gifts that American consumers plan to buy this holiday season , with 29% of respondents saying they plan to spend more on this category this holiday season .
