Canada's toy market grows by 104 million in the first eight months

According to foreign media reports, Canadian toy retail sales increased by 9% from January to August 2021, totaling $104 million. In addition, sales increased by 21% compared with the same period in 2019 before the epidemic , totaling $218 million. Unit sales increased again after lagging in 2020, up 6% year-on-year and 2% from 2019 .

The report said that most of the growth in 2020 and so far in 2021 is directly related to the epidemic , and Canadian consumers have shifted their focus from outdoor entertainment to toys. According to the survey, Canada's toy growth in 2021 came from all walks of life; especially collectible card games, plush toys, building sets and fashion dolls . In addition , some areas of the industry that were hit hard during the epidemic in 2020 have seen a strong recovery. The categories with the highest dollar growth in 2021 were games and puzzles, up 9%, outdoor and sports toys, up 11%, and plush toys , up 15%.

NPD industry analysts said that traditionally, half of the annual toy sales growth occurs between September and December. Once the epidemic blockade is lifted, Canadian consumers will flock back to physical stores for shopping, and e-commerce levels will stabilize after a sharp increase in 2020. He also said that the key October to December period is expected to see strong momentum in the development of e-commerce and physical stores .

Holiday sales highlights include Pokémon ( which has performed well this year) , as well as Barbie dolls, Star Wars and more.

Analysts said it is too early to predict which toys will be the best sellers this season, but with many toys already on the shelves in physical stores, hot-selling trends will soon emerge.

In addition, it is reported that sales of toys based on video games continue to grow, including "Super Mario Bros.", " Roblox" , etc. There are also some new Barbie concepts and brands such as Bratz that have been put on the shelves. In the case of a shortage in the US toy market, it is unknown whether a similar situation will occur in the Canadian market. Such sellers can pay more attention and ship early before the peak season arrives.

According to surveys, 70%-80% of consumers in North American markets such as the United States and Canada will choose large shopping websites, and 33% of Canadian consumers shop through smartphones, and the overall consumption level is also relatively high.
