There is hope for alleviating congestion! A North American port will operate 24 hours a day

Under pressure from port congestion, North America's largest port complex announced that it would extend port operating hours to ease pressure on the supply chain.

The Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach announced their latest move on September 17: to extend the operating hours of truck gates to allow trucks to pick up and unload containers at night and on weekends, so as to transport goods out of the ports faster - in the San Pedro Bay near the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, dozens of container ships are waiting to unload.

Mario Cordero, Executive Director of the Port of Long Beach , announced that the Port of Long Beach will take the first step towards 24-hour operations by maximizing nighttime operations. Ideally, these measures must be extended to warehouses and rail companies to fully address traffic congestion throughout the chain.

Gene Seroka, executive director of the Port of Los Angeles , announced that the Port of Los Angeles will extend gate opening hours on weekends and is trialing a "L.A. Freight Speed Up" program to improve efficiency and ensure that freight demand is met.

Additionally, both ports called on marine terminal operators to encourage them to utilize all available gate opening hours, especially during the night, to reduce congestion and maximize cargo throughput.

The two ports will work with the trucking community to help trucking companies understand gate opening times and how to take advantage of off-peak times to move freight, the release said.

However, after announcing the gate extension plan, some people said that the two ports have not yet explained how and when to implement this plan port-wide. "We haven't seen any details yet," said the CEO of the Port Trucking Association. "This is more of a statement of what they plan to do."

Previously, Cordero said that port operations must develop an "Amazon mentality" and must consider 24-hour operations to keep up with the growth in cargo volume. After the Port of Long Beach announced the new measures, Cordero said that it was ready to "take bold action immediately" to "help the supply chain transport record cargo volumes to keep our economy moving."

The Port of Los Angeles and the Port of Long Beach are the largest port complexes in North America. In Asia, many ports have achieved 24-hour operation, but this practice is not popular in the United States. Now, under tremendous supply chain pressure, this largest port complex in North America has taken the first step.
