More than 8 times the growth! The UK has become the country with the highest online shopping spending in the world

On August 23, according to foreign media reports, according to data released by the UK Office for National Statistics (ONS) , online shopping is booming around the world , and more and more retailers are beginning to turn their attention to the Internet . In 2020, online sales in almost all countries saw double-digit growth .

Among all European countries, the e-commerce markets in the UK and the Netherlands are developing the fastest, growing by more than 8 times and more than 10 times respectively since 2000 .

In addition, retail trade in Canada, France and the United Kingdom has grown fastest globally , with retail trade in these three countries almost double the level in 1995 in 2020. But looking at the amount of online shopping alone, British shoppers spend far more than any other country in the world .

The UK National Statistics Office said that since the rise of e-commerce, online retail sales have grown much faster than physical stores , and its share of all retail has increased from 3.4% in 2007 to 27.9% in 2020 .

As for the reasons for the rapid development of e-commerce, he pointed out that this was entirely due to the promotion of the COVID-19 pandemic and the increase in Internet penetration. From 2008 to 2019, the proportion of daily Internet users increased by 38%, reaching 87% in 2019 , and the proportion of online shopping users also increased by 29% during the same period (82% in 2019).

In addition, with the increase in Internet users , more companies have also embarked on the road of e-marketing. In the UK alone, among companies with more than 10 employees , the proportion of companies using online sales channels has increased from 17.1% in 2009 to 28.6 % in 2019.

Moreover, the rapid development of e-commerce has also driven the growth of other industries. The survey shows that between November 2006 and February 2020, online sales in the non-store retail and textile, clothing and footwear store industries performed particularly strongly, increasing by 14 times and 12 times respectively.

Notably, the report also pointed out that from November 2006 to February 2020 , among all areas, e-commerce in food stores grew the slowest, increasing only six times, as consumers were influenced by high shipping costs, minimum spending and the preference to choose fresh products themselves .

Currently, global e-commerce is still in a stage of rapid development. As the fastest growing country with the highest online shopping expenditure, the UK has great potential for e-commerce. We hope that merchants will seize the opportunity and grab business opportunities.
