eMarketer released a report that Canadian retail e-commerce sales will reach 86.52 billion yuan (64.51 billion US dollars) in 2021, becoming the main driving force for Canadian retail growth.
E-commerce retail will become the main growth driver of Canadian retail
The report shows that Canada's retail e-commerce sales grew by an astonishing 75.0% last year, second only to Argentina in the world. This year, Canada's retail e-commerce sales will continue to grow, with an estimated growth rate of 12%.
Affected by the epidemic, Canada's e-commerce retail sales saw strong growth in 2020, but total retail sales fell by 4.6%. This year, Canada's total retail sales will rebound, increasing by 6.4%, but the growth rate is still lower than that of retail e-commerce, and the share of retail e-commerce will continue to increase. In 2019, Canada's e-commerce retail sales accounted for 6.9% of total retail sales, but this year, this proportion will be 13.4%, nearly doubling, and by 2025, it will reach 17.2%.
"Canadian e-commerce has developed more slowly than other countries, especially the United States, so there is a lot of room for growth. The pandemic has forced retailers to sell more products online, which consumers have welcomed, and retail e-commerce has flourished last year," said Paul Briggs, chief analyst at eMarketer. "In 2021, e-commerce retail will remain the main driver of growth in Canada's retail industry."
In retail e-commerce, mobile sales will reach 29.42 billion Canadian dollars (21.93 billion U.S. dollars), equivalent to 34.0% of retail e-commerce. However, the increase in shopping apps and social commerce is driving the increase in mobile share.
eMarketer projects that there will be 24.2 million digital buyers in Canada this year. Digital purchases include purchases made on mobile devices, through social media, and across borders.
Trends in Canada’s hot e-commerce categories
The editor also checked the latest Amazon Canada search rankings and found that there are two types of products with high search rankings and an upward trend. One is 3C electronic products, such as wireless headphones, gaming peripherals, iPhone and its accessories, Apple Watch and its accessories, etc.; the other is outdoor products, such as hammocks, sunglasses, backpacks, tents, auto parts, etc.
Affected by the hot weather, the search rankings for products such as air conditioners and fans are still high, but judging from the trend, the rankings of such products have begun to decline. Sellers can adjust their sales strategies based on actual market conditions. Canadian e-commerce retail Outdoor Products |
