U.S. consumer online shopping trends for the first quarter are released, and Amazon still dominates

The data shows that this report surveyed the behaviors and preferences of 1,000 American consumers and found the following:

Financial pressure has led to a reduction in consumer spending. 56% of consumers said they can only live on their salary, and 48% of consumers said they had experienced financial setbacks in the past three months, which has prompted 70% of people to find cheaper products to reduce their financial burden, and 73% of people said they would take spending money seriously.

Many Americans rely on financial support. 43 % of consumers said they were very dependent on government stimulus measures and had difficulty making ends meet without it. It seems that the U.S. government stimulus measures are a key factor affecting consumers' lives. Another 23% received a loan (e.g., federal, private, family, or student) to make ends meet in the fourth quarter.

Consumers are adopting more technology-driven purchasing methods. When shopping online, 45% look for a browser extension or plug-in during the transaction. Nearly 50% have bought groceries online in the past three months, and a third have used curbside pickup. And 54% say they’ve purchased a product they first learned about on social media.

Amazon still dominates e-commerce. 56% of consumers said that if they could only shop at one store, it would be Amazon. In the fourth quarter of 2020, 73% of consumers shopped at Amazon, 40% at Walmart, and 18% at Target.

But Walmart has higher consumer loyalty. 70% of American consumers have Amazon Prime membership, while 38% of American consumers are currently Walmart+ members. In addition, 24% of consumers would consider getting a Walmart+ membership. eBay, Target and Kohl's have a 10% share.

Consumers are increasingly purchasing through other online platforms , especially social media platforms, with 54% of consumers saying they made a purchase after seeing a product on a social platform. Among them, consumers often purchase on social platforms such as Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Pinterset, and TikTok.
