More than 5.2 million households shop online, with Australian online spending up 63% year-on-year

According to Inside Retail , the latest data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics showed that retail spending in January 2021 was 10.6% higher than in January 2020 and 0.5% higher than in December , with online spending increasing by nearly 63% year-on-year.

 

Australia's total turnover reached $30.5 billion in January, driven by strong demand for food and liquor retail . Sales at supermarkets and grocery stores rose 1.3 % in January , while liquor rose 2.3% and specialty food retailing rose 3.1%.

 

Online spending in January increased 62.8% year-on-year

 

Moreover, due to the continuous change in consumer behavior, e-commerce is becoming more and more important . According to the analysis report on Australian online sales in January released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics , data showed that online sales in January increased by 1.6% after four consecutive months of decline .

 

Overall, online sales are well above levels from a year ago, with online spending up 62.8% in January compared to January 2020 .

 

Among them, total online sales accounted for 9.1% of total sales in January , which was basically unchanged compared with December 2020. In addition, in January, sales of pure online retailers accounted for 30% of total online sales .

According to Australia Post , online shopping grew 44.3% last year, based on deliveries between January 2021 and January 2020. In January 2021 , more than 5.2 million households shopped online, up 25% from the same period last year. Food and alcohol purchases grew the fastest in January , followed by home , garden and fashion.

 

Estore logistics general manager Leigh Williams said with some state and international border restrictions continuing into 2021, Australians were looking for alternative avenues to shop .

 

“With people spending the majority of their time at home these days, it’s no surprise that Australians are starting to spruce up their living spaces or buy new furniture ,” Williams said .

 

" Despite a small lockdown in parts of New South Wales before Christmas and early in the new year, almost all physical stores remained open . Even so, shoppers still preferred to shop online. The continued strong year-on-year growth trend across the country gives us more confidence that the preference for online shopping will continue," Williams said.
