AKIT said that in 2020, Russians spent a total of 3.221 trillion rubles on shopping on Russian and foreign e-commerce platforms or online stores, an increase of 58.5% over the same period last year. AKIT predicts that the total size of Russia's e-commerce market in 2021 is expected to reach 3.745 trillion rubles. Of this, about 3.226 trillion rubles will be occupied by domestic e-commerce platforms and online stores in Russia.
Judging from the existing data, domestic e-commerce in Russia has gradually occupied the country's retail market and e-commerce market. In terms of the retail market, AKIT data shows that in 2020, the Russian e-commerce market accounted for 9.6% of the country's total retail market sales. It is reported that in the first half of last year, driven by the epidemic, this proportion reached 10.9%, the highest level in Russian history.
In terms of the e-commerce market, the transaction volume of Russia's domestic e-commerce market in 2020 almost doubled from 2019, from 1.446 trillion rubles in 2019 to 2.781 trillion rubles in 2020, accounting for 86% of the total scale of Russia's e-commerce, while cross-border trade accounted for only 14%. In 2019, these two figures were 71% and 29% respectively. In addition, in 2020, Russia purchased 2.34 trillion pieces of goods from abroad, a decrease of 27.5% from 2019.
AKIT explained: "The significant decline in cross-border market share is due to the impact of the epidemic. For a long time, cross-border transactions have been affected by supply shortages and transportation restrictions , which has greatly increased the time cost of cross-border delivery. Therefore, some Russian consumers have turned to shopping on local e-commerce platforms."
AKIT said they did not expect the scale of Russian e-commerce to exceed the 3 trillion ruble threshold last year. The epidemic has further promoted the integration of Russian e-commerce, for example, the delivery service of a certain platform appeared on the website of its competitors; brands with their own Internet channels began to sell their products on other e-commerce platforms, etc. At present, Russian e-commerce is actively developing a new sales model, namely live streaming sales.
AKIT also announced the popular product categories on Russian and foreign cross-border platforms in 2020, as follows:
The top five popular categories on Russian domestic platforms are: electronics and home appliances, clothing and footwear, food, furniture and home furnishings, and beauty and health. Data shows that the average order for electronics and home appliances on Russian domestic platforms is 88,000 rubles, while that on foreign cross-border platforms is 10,000 rubles.
Hot-selling categories on Russia's foreign cross-border platforms: clothing and footwear, electronics and home appliances, children's products, tools and gardening equipment, pet supplies, furniture and home furnishings, food, beauty and health, and auto parts. Data shows that the average order for clothing and footwear on Russia's foreign cross-border platforms is 11,800 rubles , while that on domestic platforms is 2,000 rubles.
Electronic products, clothing and footwear have always been the darlings of the Russian e-commerce market, and they are the products that Russians snap up during various promotional festivals. Although the overall clothing retail market in Russia declined last year, online clothing sales grew against the trend. The Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade also previously stated that demand for clothing, electronic products, beauty products, etc. will rebound before the end of 2021. Russia clothing |
