Online GMV reaches $39.2 billion, Canadian e-commerce is booming

The 2020 epidemic prompted many countries to choose to implement home isolation nationwide, which led to the booming development of e-commerce. Data shows that during the COVID-19 pandemic, Canadian consumers' online shopping reached an unprecedented level, and its e-commerce grew by 20.7% in 2020 to US$39.22 billion.

Canadian retail e-commerce to grow 12.5%

Compared with e-commerce in other developed countries, many Canadian companies are lagging behind in e-commerce, but the 2020 epidemic has permanently changed the way Canadian companies operate , and their e-commerce is booming.

In order to keep up with the changes in consumer shopping, the Canadian government is also vigorously developing e-commerce. Previously, the Quebec provincial government of Canada said it would invest 900,000 Canadian dollars to create a new online shopping platform , hoping to replace e-commerce giants such as Amazon.

Previously, some institutions predicted that Canada's retail e-commerce would account for 7.7% of total retail sales in 2020, and it is expected that Canada's retail e-commerce will grow by another 12.5% in 2021. In addition to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, changes in consumer living habits are also a factor driving the growth of e-commerce.

Relevant people said that if the COVID-19 outbreak lasted only one or two months, it might not change consumers' living habits. But the fact is that the COVID-19 outbreak will not disappear soon, and it will permanently change the shopping behavior of many people, which will prompt more consumers to turn to e-commerce.

Nearly three quarters of consumers say they shop online

Previously, a survey conducted by Google Canada in September 2020 showed that 30% of respondents said they would feel nervous shopping in-store ; 35% of respondents said that social distancing measures made shopping more difficult ; and 61% said they would shop online during the holidays, and this consumption pattern may still exist after the end of the new crown epidemic.

Digital transactions played an important role in 2020. Data showed that as of October 2020 , only 8% of adult respondents surveyed by Field Agent Canada said they were unlikely to buy gifts online or in apps , while nearly three-quarters of respondents said they would definitely buy gifts online.

In addition, survey data from August 2020 showed that 52% of Canadian respondents said they would make more than half of their shopping online in 2020, of which 40 % said they would make half of their purchases on mobile devices.

In fact, Canadian e-commerce retail sales doubled during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, and it is expected that e-commerce penetration in all categories in Canada will increase significantly after the COVID-19 pandemic ends.
