The COVID-19 pandemic has forced Peruvian consumers to stay at home for a long time. Since they are all staying at home and not seeing people, why bother to dress so formally? Therefore, in pursuit of comfort and freedom, seemingly inconspicuous sandals are selling like hot cakes in Peru in the middle of summer.
Peru is a country in South America, located in the western part of South America, with a tropical desert climate. December to March of the following year is Peru's summer, and February is the hottest month in Peru. Peru has a population of about 32 million, with an average age of 28.4 years old. The Internet penetration rate is over 56%. Locals commonly use e-commerce platforms such as Meikeduo, Linio , Amazon and eBay .
According to data from the Lima Chamber of Commerce ( CCL ), Peru imported a total of about 1.072 million pairs of sandals worth $1.7 million in December last year , an increase of 375.13% year-on-year compared with 2019. It is worth noting that Peru imported about 752,000 pairs of sandals from China , worth about $1 million, and these two figures soared by 889.73% and 963.72% respectively compared with 2019. It can be seen that China is Peru's main sandal importer, accounting for 70% of imports . Peru is currently basking in the scorching summer sun. Along with the import volume of sandals, other product categories that are growing rapidly include swimsuits, small swimming pools and sunscreens, and most of them are of "Chinese origin."
Statistics from the Lima Chamber of Commerce's Foreign Trade and Development Institute ( Idexcam ) show that in December last year, Peru imported 99,431 swimsuits , up 90.09% year-on-year, with a value of about US$414,000 , of which 86.6% were produced in China .
Due to Peru's restrictions on crowded places such as beaches and swimming pools during the epidemic, many families in Peru chose to buy inflatable and movable small swimming pools for home use . The import volume of such products in December was 86,307, an increase of 24.85% year-on-year, with a value of US$679,000. It is worth noting that all swimming pool products in Peru are reportedly imported from China ;
Sun protection is also very important in summer. Spending a long time in an open-air swimming pool can easily cause sunburn. Therefore, in December last year, the number of sunscreens imported by Peru from abroad, mainly Spain, soared by 99.86% to 45,376 pieces, worth US$760,000.
However, the number of sunglasses imported by Peru fell by 11.25% to 485,000 pairs, and the import value also fell by 6.6%. CCL pointed out that most of the sunglasses imported by Peru also come from China, so the number of sunglasses exported from China to Peru fell by 12.25% to 465,000 pairs, and the import value fell by 30.43% to US$906,000. The epidemic prevention situation in Peru is still quite severe. The Peruvian government announced a 14-day "lockdown" order on January 26, which is tentatively scheduled to be lifted on February 14. Sellers can refer to the above hot-selling products to prepare stocks, and at the same time, pay attention to adjusting the delivery time to avoid unnecessary losses due to backlog of goods.
